Georgia Comes Back to Force Split with No. 10 Kentucky Sunday

April 11, 2021 | Softball

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Down 8-1 in the second game of Sunday's twin bill, 20th-ranked Georgia softball came back to top No. 10 Kentucky, 9-8, and force a doubleheader split at John Cropp Stadium.

Georgia (25-8, 5-6) fell in the series opener 11-3 in five innings to the Wildcats.

Kentucky 11, Georgia 3 (5 inn.)
Georgia scattered three hits to begin the day, one of which was a home run from sophomore Sydney Kuma. Kuma concluded the contest with two RBI.

Graduate Mary Wilson Avant (13-4) suffered the loss in the circle. Avant pitched four and a third innings, striking out three and walking three. Senior Lauren Mathis relieved Avant in the fifth, working a third of an inning.

Kentucky's Renee Abernathy hit a two-out, two-run home run in the second to put the Wildcats ahead 2-0 in the contest.

Kuma put the Bulldogs on the board and cut Kentucky's newfound lead in half with a solo home run to left, her 10th home run of the season, 2-1.

The Wildcats responded in the bottom of the inning with a three-run home run off the bat of Erin Coffel to put Kentucky ahead 5-1.

With bases loaded and no out in the fifth, Savana Sikes fouled out down the left field line, allowing all runners to tag and Sydney Chambley to score. Kuma followed with a foul out to left of her own, allowing Jayda Kearney to tag and score from third, cutting Kentucky's lead to 5-3.

A six-spot in the fifth inning lifted the Wildcats to the 11-3 victory. A pair of wild pitches allowed Kentucky to score its 10th and 11th runs in the game.

Georgia 9, Kentucky 8
Georgia found itself down 8-1 going to the sixth inning. The Bulldogs plated four runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-8 lead and come back to defeat the Wildcats.

Seven different Bulldogs recorded hits in the nightcap, led by a pair of hits from Chambley. Sophomore Sara Mosley and Kearney each knocked three-run home runs in the game.

In the circle, Alley Cutting (5-2) earned the win in the circle as she was the pitcher of record in the seventh, working five and two-thirds innings out of the pen. She struck out five Wildcats. Avant picked up her first save of the season, pitching the seventh inning out of the pen.

A solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first by Kayla Kowalik put Kentucky on the board, 1-0. Later in the inning, Lauren Johnson knocked a two-RBI double to widen the early lead to 3-0. Cutting entered in the first and struck out the two batters she faced to end the inning.

Chambley ripped her eighth home run of the season to centerfield in the top of the second to cut into the Wildcat lead, 3-1.

Kentucky hung up three runs in the bottom of the inning with RBI hits from Kowalik and Johnson in the frame, 6-1. Kentucky plated a run in each the third and fifth innings to widen its lead to 8-1.

Junior Lacey Fincher led off the top of the sixth with her 11th home run of the season to center. With two on and two out, Kearney used a big swing to knock a three-run shot and slice Kentucky's lead to three, 8-5.

Georgia kept the momentum alive heading into the seventh inning. Sikes was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and took second on a wild pitch. She came in to score on a single up the middle from Kuma, 8-6. Fincher then drew a four-pitch walk. Mosley stepped in and blasted a three-run home run to right, putting the Bulldogs in the lead for the first time on the day, 9-8.

Kentucky put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Georgia turned a 4-3 double play to secure the comeback victory.

The Bulldogs and Wildcats will decide the series Monday at 7 p.m. on SEC Network live from John Cropp Stadium.
