April 12, 2021 | Softball
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 20th-ranked Georgia softball team defeated No. 10 Kentucky Monday to earn the series victory over the Wildcats at John Cropp Stadium, 5-2.
Coming off a game where she hit a game-winning home run, sophomore Sara Mosley scattered two hits and a season-best four RBI Monday. Freshman Sydney Chambley also picked up two hits in the contest. Six total Bulldogs recorded a hit Monday evening.
In the circle, graduate Mary Wilson Avant (14-4) pitched the complete game, allowing two runs on 10 hits. She fanned a trio of Wildcats in the game.
A leadoff double by junior Savana Sikes then back-to-back hit batsmen loaded the bases for Georgia to begin the game. After knocking the winning hit Sunday night, Mosley lined a single back up the middle to plate two runs and put the Bulldogs on the board. Chambley immediately followed with a single through the six hole to widen Georgia's early lead to 3-0 in the first.
Mosley lengthened the Bulldogs' lead with a two-run home run shot down the left field line in the third, 5-0.
Kentucky's Kayla Kowalik sent the first pitch of the home half of the inning over the wall in center to put Kentucky on the board, 5-1. Avant limited the damage in the inning, stranding two Wildcats on base.
The Wildcats scratched across a run on a Grace Baalman RBI single to center in the fifth, cutting Georgia's lead to 5-2.
Avant was able to hold the Wildcats scoreless in the final two innings to secure the series victory for the Bulldogs.
Georgia will host USC Upstate in a non-conference midweek game at Jack Turner Stadium. First pitch against the Spartans is set for 6 p.m.
