Duhovnik, Rush Combine For Three Event Wins At Hurricane Alumni Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. --- Freshman Jan Duhovnik earned a third-place finish in the decathlon while sophomore Ella Rush placed sixth in the heptathlon on the second day of the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on Saturday.

Duhovnik picked up wins in the discus and javelin on the decathlon's second day, helping him tally 7,071 points in his first collegiate decathlon. Rush, a native of Repton, U.K., compiled 5,180 points over two days, highlighted by a win in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 6.03 meters/19 feet, 9.50 inches.

The Lowdown: Duhovnik opened his day with a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 15.49. The performance helped him move from ninth to fifth in the decathlon through six events. The Ljubljana, Slovenia, native then earned a victory in the discus with a mark of 47.39m/155-5 on his second attempt.

In the decathlon's eighth event, Duhovnik rose to fourth place after earning a fourth-place finish in the pole vault. The freshman cleared the bar at 4.20m/13-9.25 on his third and final attempt. He improved to third with his javelin victory, recording a mark of 56.29m/184-8 on his second try. Duhovnik closed out the day with a third-place finish in the 1500m, crossing the finish line in 4:57.03 to capture bronze in the decathlon with 7,071 points.

Rush, who entered the day in 11th place through four heptathlon events, shot into fifth place with a win in the long jump. The sophomore leaped to a mark of 6.03m/19-9.50 on her third and final attempt to set a new personal best in the event.Â

In the javelin, Rush placed 14th with a mark of 28.65m/94-0 to move into sixth place with one event to go. She then clocked a personal-best time of 2:22.15 in the 800m to place sixth in the event while finishing sixth overall in the heptathlon with 5,180 points.

What's Next For The Bulldogs?: The Bulldogs will head to Gainesville, Fla., the site of the 2024 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championship meet, to compete at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational from April 12-13. The Florida-hosted event will mark the sixth of nine scheduled regular season outdoor meets over seven weekends. Â
