
Stege and Coetzee Earn First Team All-America Honors at NCAAs

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Highlighted by a pair of podium trips and a consolation final victory, the University of Georgia women's swimming and diving team continued their strong performance at the 2023 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Thursday evening at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center.
In the 500 freestyle, sophomores Rachel Stege and Duné Coetzee earned First Team All-America citations as they reached the championship final. Stege finished fifth with a time of 4:37.32, followed by Coetzee in eighth at 4:40.58. In prelims, both swimmers won their heats, with Coetzee taking her round with a personal-best time of 4:38.54.
Senior Zoie Hartman added to her All-America list by winning the 200 IM consolation final with a time of 1:54.63. Hartman stood in third place following the first two legs before charging ahead down the stretch, taking the race by one-hundredth of a second. Later in the 50 freestyle, sophomore Eboni McCarty earned her first career All-America accolade as she tied for 14th at 22.01. In the morning session, McCarty set a new PB of 21.86, the seventh-fastest mark in school history.
In the closing 200 freestyle relay, McCarty joined junior Julianna Stephens, graduate Callie Dickinson and junior Sloane Reinstein to finish 20th with a time of 1:29.38. McCarty led off with a 50 free split of 22.22, with Reinstein closing at 22.37.
In other prelims action, sophomore Abby McCulloh placed 21st in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:41.25, followed by senior Jillian Barczyk in 31st place at 4:42.44 and Reinstein in 60th at 4:47.24. In the 200 IM, Dickinson finished 39th with a time of 1:57.80, while junior Meghan Wenzel placed 38th on 1-meter with a mark of 239.80.
Following Thursday's competition, Virginia remained in first place with 208.5 points, followed by Texas (162), Louisville (117), and Stanford (106). Georgia stands in 10th place with 66.5 points entering Friday's action.
The NCAA Championships continue Friday with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter diving, and 400 medley relay. McCarty is seeded ninth in the 100 back, while Hartman ranks 10th in the 100 breaststroke.
Swimming prelims begin at 10 a.m., followed by diving prelims at noon and finals at 6 p.m. Live coverage of the meet will stream on ESPN+, with live results available online and to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app.
