Georgia Earns Seven Wins on Second Night of Invite

ATHENS, Ga. – Boosted by strong performances from both backstroke groups, the University of Georgia men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned seven wins on the second day of competition at the Georgia Invitational Friday evening at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Sophomore Eboni McCarty continued a terrific performance with a winning B-cut time of 51.53 in the 100 backstroke, twice setting new personal bests and moving into fourth all-time in program history. In the morning prelims, graduate teammate Marie Schobel became the sixth-fastest performer in program history with a season-best B-cut of 52.25. Schobel and McCarty led off and anchored the 200 medley relay, which earned a B-cut with a second-place time of 1:36.95.
The other two members of the 200 medley relay, graduate Callie Dickinson and senior Zoie Hartman, also earned victories Friday evening. Dickinson tied for first in the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 52.60, while Hartman earned a second individual win as she topped the 100 breaststroke with a season-best B-cut of 58.76.
Elsewhere for the Georgia women, junior Sloane Reinstein finished fourth in the 200 freestyle with a season-best B-cut of 1:46.34, followed by freshman Shea Furse in fifth with a personal-best B-cut of 1:46.55. Reinstein and Furse joined Hartman and senior Jillian Barczyk to win the 800 freestyle relay with a season-best B-cut of 7:03.72, propelled by Furse's 1:46.78 on the opening 200 free.
In the men's competition, senior Ian Grum opened the night with a thrilling win in the 400 IM, taking first with a B-cut of 3:40.81 and moving into second nationally. Junior Jake Magahey moved to the top of the national standings in the 200 freestyle with a season-best B-cut of 1:32.70. Magahey later led off the 800 freestyle relay with a split of 1:34.05, leading to an eventual runner-up B-cut of 6:19.30.
Senior Bradley Dunham joined Grum for a terrific showing in the 100 backstroke, placing second with a PB of 45.45 and moving up to fourth in program history. Junior Wesley Ng placed sixth with a B-cut of 45.94, while Grum took seventh at 46.49. Earlier in prelims, Grum dropped the sixth-fastest time in program history at 45.82. In the 100 back B final, sophomore Mitchell Norton won with a time of 46.35, eighth-fastest all-time, while freshman Sam Powe went to ninth all-time with a PB of 46.49.
Fellow freshman Kristian Pitshugin also entered the program top-10 at eighth in the 100 breaststroke with his seventh-place time of 52.91. Sophomore Arie Voloschin also earned a B-cut with her 10th-place time of 53.52. Along with Magahey, four additional Bulldogs earned B-cuts in the 200 freestyle, while sophomore Peter Sacca picked up a B-cut as he placed fifth in the 100 butterfly.
At the diving well, junior Meghan Wenzel took first with a score of 297.25, while freshman Hannah Stumpf finished seventh at 279.65. In the men's 3-meter, sophomore Nolan Lewis finished 10th with a score of 325.60, followed by graduate Kevin Li in 11th at 313.25 and sophomore Rhett Hopkins in 12th at 300.15.
The Georgia Invitational concludes Saturday with another full day of competition, featuring prelims at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m. The final day will include action in the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, platform diving, and the 400 freestyle relay. Live coverage of both swimming and diving will be available on SEC Network+.
Entering the final day of competition, both Georgia squads sit third in the overall standings, with Auburn leading the women's field and Florida on top of the women's standings.
