May 08, 2021 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Georgia softball dropped its series at Mississippi State Saturday, falling in game two at Nusz Park, 4-2.
Freshmen Jayda Kearney and Ellie Armistead along with sophomore Sara Mosley all contributed a hit in the contest. Kearney provided the big hit for the Bulldogs with a solo home run in the second inning.
Graduate Mary Wilson Avant (15-9) suffered the loss in her start in the circle. Avant pitched five innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Senior Lauren Mathis pitched one scoreless inning in relief.
Kearney launched her fifth home run of the season on the first pitch of the second inning to put Georgia (29-19, 7-16) on the board 1-0. Later in the inning with bases loaded, junior Savana Sikes lined out to left, deep enough to allow freshman Sydney Chambley to tag up and score from third, widening Georgia's lead to 2-0.
Mississippi State (31-22, 7-15) loaded the bases to begin the home half of the inning. MSU got one on a walk to drive in a run but a 5-3 double play ended the scoring threat in the inning to preserve the 2-1 Georgia lead.
Mia Davidson tied the game in the bottom of the third with a solo shot to center, 2-2. MSU took the lead in the fourth on a two-run double to right off the bat of Chloe Malau'ulu to take a 4-2 lead.
The 4-2 advantage stood for Mississippi State as the Bulldogs from Starkville held on to take the series.
Georgia will look to salvage the regular season finale Sunday at 2 p.m., ET. The game will stream live on SEC Network.
