STARKVILLE, Miss. – The 22nd-ranked Georgia softball team fell to Mississippi State in the regular season finale Sunday afternoon at Nusz Park, 4-3.
Georgia (29-20, 7-17) will travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the 2021 SEC Tournament. Georgia, the No. 11 seed, will take on No. 6 Kentucky in the late game on Wednesday, May 12. First pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m., ET.
The Bulldogs had the tying run on third in the bottom of the seventh but stranded the run there to end the regular season.
Junior Lacey Fincher and sophomore Sara Mosley provided pop in the Bulldogs' lineup Sunday, each hitting a home run. Georgia scattered six total hits in the contest.
Senior Lauren Mathis (5-2) suffered the loss in the circle. She pitched two and a third innings in her start, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Graduate Mary Wilson Avant worked just shy of four innings in relief, not allowing a run and fanned three MSU hitters.
Carter Spexarth doubled to left with two out in the first and immediately scored on a single to left off the bat of Mia Davidson to take an early 1-0 lead.
Fincher tied the game with her 13th home run of the season in the top of the second out to right center, 1-1.
Mississippi State loaded the bases in the third. A sac fly off the bat of Davidson scored the runner from third. On the play, an errant throw to third base allowed the other two runs to score and put MSU ahead 4-1.
Fincher was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth inning. Mosley stepped in and blasted her fifth home run of the season off the video board in left field to cut the MSU lead to 4-3.
A fielder's choice allowed sophomore Sydney Kum to reach with two out in the top of the seventh. Freshman Jayda Kearney singled to the pitcher and an error on the play allowed Kuma to go to third. A popup to second ended Georgia's rally, 4-3.
