Bulldogs Drop 3-0 Decision to Kentucky in SEC Tournament

May 13, 2021 | Softball

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Georgia softball team fell to sixth-seeded Kentucky Wednesday night in the opening round of the SEC Softball Tournament at Rhoads Stadium.

Graduate Mary Wilson Avant (15-10) suffered the loss in the circle. Avant allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out two. She did not allow a walk or hit batsman in the contest.

Georgia (29-21) was held to three hits in the game. Freshman Ellie Armistead picked up a double while sophomore Sara Mosley and freshman Jayda Kearney also contributed a hit each.

Defensively, Georgia played a clean game while also flashing the leather and making big defensive plays in the contest.

Kentucky (39-12) began the bottom of the first with back-to-back infield singles. Erin Coffel singled through the left side to drive in Kayla Kowalik and give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. Avant limited the damage, stranding two on base.

The Wildcats extended the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Coffel tagged up and scored on a sac fly to short off the bat of Renee Abernathy.

Miranda Stoddard made it a 3-0 game with a leadoff home run for Kentucky in the fifth inning, her eighth of the season.

Georgia was held scoreless the final two innings as Kentucky went on to win the game 3-0.

The Bulldogs will await the NCAA Selection Sunday to hear their placement in the field of 64. The Selection Show will air on ESPN 2 Sunday at 9 p.m., ET.

Head Coach Lu Harris-Champer
On what was working well for the team in Wednesday's game…
"The defense was outstanding. The middle infield played unbelievable. It was just beautiful to see the way they came out and played in competition the way we get to see them play every day in practice."

On what they keys are moving forward to get momentum back…
"I just think we've got to keep playing hard and know that it's fresh every day we get out there. I thought we had a lot of heart and a lot of guts today. Mary [Wilson Avant] pitched really well. It was fun to see her ball movement and her changeup was really on point again. We've just got to keep battling. We play good teams and we're a good team too. We've just got to keep battling."
