RIO MAR, P.R. — The Georgia women's golf team posted an 11-over 299 in Sunday's first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. The Bulldogs are in seventh place on the team leaderboard at the Wyndham Rio Mar Country Club, 10 shots off the pace of No. 7 Arkansas.
"Great teams more up the leaderboard as the tournament goes on because they learn from their mistakes and improve," head coach Josh Brewer said. "That's exactly what we look forward to doing tomorrow."
Freshman Harmie Constantino and junior Kelsey Kurnett, who is competing individually, both shot even-par 72 on Sunday. In addition to Constantino's score, the Bulldogs also counted a pair of 75s from freshman Jenny Bae and junior Gabriela Coello and a 77 from senior Rinko Mitsunaga. Georgia dropped freshman Jo-Hua Hung's 78.
"It was a good round that was close to being a really good round," Brewer said. "I could see a little bit of rust, which you would expect in the second round of the spring. We did some things really well, but at the same time you could see some mental errors, especially on the par-5s. We had a couple of loose swings that led to bogeys or doubles when we thought we would have a chance to make birdies. We're good enough to clean that up."
Overall, Constantino and Kurnett are tied for 12th, Bae and Coello are tied for 29th, Mitsunaga is tied for 45th and Hung is tied for 56th.
The 14-team field teed off with a shotgun start on Sunday.
Constantino's loop began at No. 5. She opened with birdies at No. 5 and No. 6 but gave one of those strokes back with a bogey at No. 8. Constantino dipped to 4-under with a trio of birdies at No. 12, No. 13 and No. 14 but gradually came back to par with with a double-bogey at No. 17 and bogeys at No. 18 and No. 4.
Kurnett teed off at No. 13 and started hot, with birdies at No. 15, No. 16 and No. 18. Bogeys at No. 5 and No. 6 on the front side brought her to 1-under before a third bogey at No. 10. She finished her day with two more pars.
Arkansas shot 1-over 189 and has a one-shot lead over No. 21 TCU in the team field. Trailing the Razorbacks and Horned Frogs and rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 11 Kent State and Purdue at 292, ECU at 297, Virginia Tech at 298, the Bulldogs at 200 and Augusta, N.C. State and Indiana all at 300.
ECU's Dorthea Forbrigd grabbed the individual lead with a 5-under 67, two shots better than the trio of Arkansas' Dylan Kim, Kent State's Karoline Stormo and Purdue's Danielle DuToit.
Play continues on Tuesday, with the Bulldogs paired with Augusta and N.C. State. Those three teams will tee off at 9:00 a.m. ET on holes Nos. 8-10. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
