Phoenix, Ariz. — The Georgia women's golf team posted a 301 in Friday's opening round of the PING/ASU Invitational at the Papago Golf Course.
The Bulldogs, who are No. 34 in this week's Golfstat rankings, are in 13th place on a stacked leaderboard. Eight of the top-9 teams are ranked in the top-25, and Georgia is just five strokes from No. 5 UCLA.
"I think a lot of it stems from the fact that we haven't competed since the Darius," head coach Josh Brewer said. "It looked like we haven't competed in three weeks. There was a little best of rust. You have to start some where. It's not exactly where we want to be, but we still have a chance to move up and have a good finish against one of the best fields in the nation. We need to bounce back on day two and day three, and we'll start that tomorrow."
Freshmen Jenny Bae and Jo-Hua Hung both shot 74 to lead the Bulldogs on Friday. Georgia also counted a 76 from senior Rinko Mitsunaga and a 77 by freshman Harmie Constantino, while dropping Kelsey Kurnett's 79. Gabriela Coello, who is competing as an individual, signed for a 76.
Overall, Bae and Hung are tied for 30th, Mitsunaga and Coello are tied for 51st, Constantino is tied for 63rd and Kurnett is tied for 72nd.
No. 4 Stanford shot 287 to grab the first-round lead, a shot better than No. 16 Arizona State. The Cardinal's Andrea Lee is atop the individual leaderboard. She fired a 5-under 67, one stroke lower than Oklahoma's Kaitlin Milligan.
Georgia will be paired with Colorado and several individual competitors on Saturday, teeing off from No. 10 between 12:30-1:06 ET. Live scoring will be updated on a three-hole basis at www.golfstat.com.
