No. 1 Bulldogs Set to Face Northwestern at ITA National Team Indoors First Round

EVANSTON, Ill. — The No. 1-ranked Georgia women's tennis team is set to face off against Northwestern in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships first round on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET at the Combe Tennis Center.

Georgia suffered its first defeat of the season in a 4-3 loss against North Carolina. In doubles, the Bulldogs dropped matches on courts one and two to trail 1-0 heading into singles. Following losses on courts four and two to trail 3-0 in the match, Georgia staged a quick comeback bid sparked by Aysegul Mert on court five, taking a 7-5, 7-6(6) victory over No. 23 Tatum Evans. The win also marked Mert's first career ranked singles victory. Within several minutes, No. 29 Anastasiia Lopata secured a come-from-behind victory over Alanis Hamilton, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, on court three to pull the Bulldogs within one. Moving over to court six, No. 60 Guillermina Grant earned her first singles win of the spring as she held on to defeat Claire Hill, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and level the match at 3-3. Ultimately, the Tar Heels prevailed in three sets on court one to take the match 4-3.
Scouting the Opponent
Northwestern currently sits at 4-1 on the season, entering Friday's match on a three-match winning streak. The Wildcats share a common victory with the Bulldogs, having defeated Georgia Tech 4-2 in their last outing on Feb. 2. Led by head coach Claire Pollard in her 24th season at the helm, Northwestern will look to make some noise as hosts of the 2025 ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Wildcats own one ranked doubles pair in the latest ITA rankings with Britany Lau and Mika Dagan Fruchtman coming in at No. 64.
