Former Dawgs Bring Home Hardware From USATF Championships

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --- Former Georgia track and field NCAA champions Kyle Garland and Elija Godwin each medaled at the USATF Indoor Championships in Staten Island, N.Y., over the weekend.
 
Garland, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., tallied a 128-point victory in the heptathlon over Hakim McMorris following the seven events over two days.  Garland won the long and high jumps as well as the shot put.  
 
Godwin, a native of Covington, Ga., collected a bronze medal in the 400-meter dash final out of lane one with a 46.09.  Godwin clocked a 45.75 in the qualifying round at the meet after speeding to a season best of 45.56 earlier this year at Clemson, which is currently the world's 13th-best time in 2025.  He is now slated to now represent Team USA on the relay at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, on March 21-23.
 
Georgia also had a current assistant, Bailey Lear, and three other former Bulldogs compete at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.  Lear started her meet by registering a personal record (51.56) to win the first round of the women's 400m.  She then took off for another PR of 51.55 to take fourth in the final.
 
Other former Bulldog NCAA champions competing included Devon Williams (eighth in the heptathlon), Matthew Boling (12th in the 400m) and Will Sumner (16th in the 400m).
 
In addition, signee Taylor Cox (Union Catholic HS, N.J.) was sixth in the 60m hurdle final with an 8.15.  Cox clocked an 8.13 in the first round to punch her ticket to the final. 
 
The current Bulldogs will begin the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, on Thursday and the meet will continue through Saturday.
