Magahey Finishes Third in 500y Freestyle at NCAAs

INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Jake Magahey's fourth-consecutive top-three finish in the 500-yard freestyle highlighted the second night of competition for the University of Georgia men's swimming and diving team at the 2024 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships Thursday at the IU Natatorium.
Magahey earned First Team All-America honors in the 500y freestyle with a third place and season-best time of 4:07.12, the second-fastest swim and 10th sub-4:10 time of his illustrious Georgia career. The Dacula native remained in fourth place for the first half of the race before overtaking California's Gabriel Jett at the 350-yard mark and holding third through the finish. In prelims, he earned the top seed with a then-season-best time of 4:09.36.
Graduate Dillon Downing earned a Second Team citation as he placed 14th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.14, earning a fourth All-America accolade in the event. In the morning, Downing turned in a time of 19.03, the sixth-fastest of his career. Junior Reese Branzell finished 39th with a time of 19.50, while sophomore Ruard van Renen tied for 40th at 19.51, a new PB that ranked seventh in program history.
Downing then joined fellow graduates Miles Simon and Bradley Dunham and Branzell to finish 15th in the 200y freestyle relay with a time of 1:16.16, the third-fastest in program history. Downing led off with another 19.03 split, while Dunham closed at 19.22 to earn Second Team honors.
In the 200-yard IM, fifth-year senior Zach Hils finished 17th in prelims with a personal-best time of 1:42.08, moving up to fifth all-time in program history. Fellow fifth-year Ian Grum finished 38th with a time of 1:44.43. In other prelims action, freshman Tomas Koski took 18th in the 500y free at 4:13.68, while sophomore Sam Powe placed 46th at 4:20.21.
Through two days of competition, Georgia ranks 11th overall with 57 points.
The NCAA Championships continue Friday with the 400y individual medley, 100y butterfly, 200y freestyle, 100y breaststroke, 100y backstroke, 3-meter diving, and 400y medley relay. Grum and Magahey both hold top-eight seeds in the 400y IM, while van Renen and Dunham rank in the top 10 in the 100y backstroke. Prelims begin at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m. Live coverage will stream on ESPN+ with results available on GeorgiaDogs.com.
