Black Team Wins Red and Black Scrimmage

September 22, 2023 | Equestrian

BISHOP, Ga. – The University of Georgia equestrian team held its Annual Red and Black Scrimmage on Friday at the UGA Equestrian Complex. The Black Team won the meet with a final score of 12-6.

Most Outstanding Performer honors were awarded to junior Arden Stromnes (Flat), freshman Tessa Downey (Fences), senior Hayley Freeman (Horsemanship) and Jax Bound (Reining).

"Great day," head coach Meghan Boenig said. "It was beautiful out here in Bishop, seeing the alumni come in and help us out in so many ways. What was so impressive was seeing some quality rides and some big scores. Really ready to go out there and produce, showing that we are ready for next weekend opening up play for us against UT Martin. Having said that, we saw some great moments, but there are some things that need tightening up as far as our organization beforehand and executing our plans. I am really appreciative of having a scrimmage like this to show where we can put some purpose and intention and be better the next day."

The scrimmage started with Flat. With five riders for each team, the Black Team took a 3-1 lead. Stromnes put the Black Team on the board with a score of 80. Freshman Sarina Da Cruz followed Stromnes with a second point for the Black Team with a 69. Sophomore Tessa Brown added the third consecutive Team Black point to the board with a 77.5. Freshman Madi Nadolenco earned the point for Team Red with a 72.

Meanwhile in Reining, the Black Team continued to perform as they edged out the Red Team by a 3-1 margin. Freshman Kennedy Buchanan started the event with a 70.5 and a point for the Black Team. Freshman Abbey Zawisza earned the second Black point with a 71. Freshman Jordyn Budzynski earned the point for Team Red with a 72.5. Sophomore Raegan Shepherd rounded out the event and rode to a 72 to score the Black Team's final point.

Competition continued in Fences as Team Red took three points to two. Nadolenco collected the first point for the Red Team with an 88. Downey followed Nadolenco with a 92 to put the Red Team ahead. Freshman Liza Cram earned a point for the Black Team as she jumped a 74. Junior Melissa Deryn Foster rode to a 78 for the third Red point. Da Cruz added a final point for the Black Team with a score of 82.

In Horsemanship, the Black Team took a 4-1 advantage. Sophomore Kendall McClintock earned the first Black Team point with a 73. Sophomore Alyvia Dixon collected the point for the Red Team with a 74.5. Junior Austin Layer followed suit with a 72.5. Zawisza rode to a 73 to earn the third point for the Black Team. Freeman earned the final point for the Black Team with a 75.

The 2023-24 season officially begins on September 30 against UT Martin.  The meet is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the UGA Equestrian Complex. Admission is free.
