Track Travels West To Trio Of L.A Meets

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Bulldog track and field teams traveled Tuesday and Wednesday in anticipation for three separate meets in the L.A. area that run over the next four days.
 
The largest Georgia contingent will compete at the 63rd Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on Wednesday through Saturday.  Bulldogs will also represent at the Cal State LA Twilight Open on Thursday and at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., on Friday.
 
Latest Rankings: The Georgia women are ranked fourth in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national rankings while the Bulldog men are holding down the 10th spot. 
 
When Do The Bulldogs Start Competition? Freshman Ella Rush is slated to begin her first career collegiate heptathlon at the Mt. SAC Relays on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET.  Rush and the heptathletes will complete the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m on day one.  Thirty minutes after the women start, senior Kyle Garland will begin his first decathlon of 2023 at 2:30 p.m.  The combined events collegiate record holder and the decathletes are scheduled to take care of the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m on Wednesday.
 
Julia Harisay and Elsie Igberaese will line up in the women's discus at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Cal State LA Twilight Open followed by Mia Anderson and Ana da Silva in the women's shot put at 3 p.m.  Gavin Beverage, who posted a personal record last weekend in Athens, will wrap things up at the meet in the men's shot put, which arrives after the completion of the women's shot.
 
On Friday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Sam Bowers and Ellie Hall will compete in the men and women's 5000m, respectively.

Coach Caryl's Comments: "We saw some breakthrough performances and development in a variety of events despite some challenging conditions at our home meet," said Bulldog head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert.  "I am now excited to see how our teams perform out west against some of the best in the country.  We are also aiming to get our multi-event athletes in a strong position for the postseason.  Weather should improve as the week goes on so banking our performances will follow suit.  GO DAWGS!"

Bulldogs Competing: In addition to those listed above, Keshaun Black, Matthew Boling, Caleb Cavanaugh, Alejandro Collins, Johannes Erm, Elija Godwin, Marc Minichello, Christopher Morales Williams, Clay Pender, Alencar Pereira, Alon Rogow, Will Sumner and Nikolai van Huyssteen are expected to compete on the men's side at the Mt. SAC Relays.
 
Leah Anderson, Aaliyah Butler, Kenondra Davis, Kaila Jackson, Elena Kulichenko, Titiana Marsh, Madison McConico, Erin McMeniman, Dominique Mustin, Zoe Pollock, Brandee Presley, Haley Tate, Mikeishsa Welcome, Autumn Wilson and Bella Witt are entered in the meet from the women's squad.
 
SEC Honors Flow In: The Bulldogs earned a trio of Southeastern Conference weekly honors following last weekend's Spec Towns + Torrin Lawrence Invitational in Athens.  Boling was named the Men's Runner of the Week, Minichello garnered Men's Field Athlete of the Week and Wilson earned Women's Freshman of the Week honors.
 
Boling swept the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, highlighting his performance with the country's fourth fastest 200m this year at 20.26.  Minichello launched the javelin a Georgia personal best 74.52 meters/244 feet, 6 inches to win.  Wilson moved her name to the top of the national performance list following her victory in the 200m with a 22.56.
 
Next Up: There will be a variety of three more meets in April to continue the outdoor campaign, starting with the Georgia Tech Invitational and Virginia Challenge on April 21-22.  The SEC Championships are slated to be in Baton Rouge, La., on May 11-13.  Following the NCAA East Prelims in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 24-27, Georgia's qualified teammates will travel to Austin, Texas, prior to the NCAA Championships (June 7-10).
