The Lowdown: Garland, who was competing in his first decathlon since last year's World Championships, shaved .07 off his previous career best in the 100m to start the meet.  He was third in his heat but fourth overall after running a 10.56 in the 100m.

The Philadelphia, Pa., native collected his first victory of the competition with a 7.70 meters/25 feet, 3 ¼ inches mark in the long jump.  His second attempt, which was aided by a 2.7 meters/second wind, gave him a 13-point overall lead following two events.

Garland warmed up with an opening attempt of 15.60m/51-2.25 before launching a massive personal record 16.77m/55-0.25 on his second try to win the shot put, which was a collegiate all-time best in the dec shot.  This mark delivered his second straight win and bumped his overall edge up to 117 points.

With at least one miss at all four of his heights, Garland hit a mark of 2.04m/6-8.25 on his second try in the high jump to take fourth.  He managed to keep his overall lead in the event headed into the day's finale.

Garland was 12th in the 400m after registering a 49.84.  Thanks to his final event's results, Garland was 36 points ahead of the nearest competitor headed into Thursday.

Rush was second in her heat and 13th overall to score her first points with a personal best in the hep 100m hurdles.  She shot across the finish line in 14.27 to put herself within 100 points of seventh place.

Rush completed her second event, the high jump, in ninth thanks to a third attempt clearance at 1.68m/5-6.  This effort pulled her into 11th place overall.  In the shot put, Rush's best mark came on her first throw as she reached 11.83m/38-9.75 to finish 11th.  Her showing in the shot kept her in 11th place overall.

Hanging in a familiar spot, Rush rounds up her first day by taking 11th in the 200m to for 11th overall on day one.  She finished her race in 25.27 and with 3,283 points on the day.
