September 29, 2022 | Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia men's tennis team is hitting the road for the first of five times this fall season as four Bulldogs will head to Tuscaloosa to participate in the Alabama Four-In-The-Fall starting on Friday at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.

Representing Georgia in the field is Filipe Costa, Britton Johnston, Thomas Paulsell and Miguel Perez Peña. The four will being with doubles play at 12:30 p.m. and then transition into singles starting at 2:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. For the final day of play on Sunday, doubles will start at 11 a.m. and singles at 12:30 p.m.

The tournament will be played as best of three sets, including a full third set, with no-Ad scoring. Each participating school will have two doubles teams playing in the field, with both acting as one unit throughout.

To advance in the field, a team will need to win two of their three matches in singles and doubles, meaning one in doubles and singles or two in singles. If a pair wins only one of those three matches in a given round, they will not progress to the next round of the tournament.

Sophomore Paulsell opened the fall season with two singles wins, one in straight sets, and one in doubles with Teodor Guisca against Virginia's Ty Switzer and Georgia State's Gabriele Datei, 8-4.

Fifth year Johnston opened the fall season 3-0 in doubles with Blake Croyder and won the doubles title at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. The veteran tandem defeated one ranked opponent during the opening weekend, USC's No. 36 Peter Makk and Lodewijk Weststrate, 8-2.

Perez Peña has also started off the year strong. The sophomore has won two of his three singles matches, dropping the lone one to a ranked opponent, and is looking to build on the strong beginning he has had.

Following the Alabama Four-In-The-Fall, the Bulldogs will look ahead to the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
