Track To Compete In Throws, Jumps, Multis At Tennessee Relays

April 06, 2022 | Track & Field

ATHENS, Ga. --- Members of Georgia's track and field teams make the trip to Knoxville, Tenn., this week for the Tennessee Relays, which run Thursday through Saturday.

The Bulldogs are only taking a dozen student-athletes to Tennessee's campus and will only be competing during the meet's first two days.

When Do The Dogs Start: Junior Kyle Garland will compete in his first decathlon of the year with the competition's first five events (100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m) beginning at 11:10 a.m. on day one.  This will only be Garland's second collegiate decathlon and third overall since he started at Georgia during the 2018-19 academic year.

The Philadelphia, Pa., native redshirted in 2019 and then sat out with the rest of the team in 2020 because of the pandemic.  In 2021, Garland won the Southeastern Conference dec title (8,196 points) before sitting out NCAAs to ready for the U.S. Olympic Trials.  Setting five personal bests each at SECs and at the Trials, Garland finished sixth last summer at the Trials (8,140).

Four Lady Bulldogs and a pair of Bulldog men will throw the hammer at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively, to round out Thursday's action.

What Dogs Are Competing: Graduate transfers Jamari Drake, Julia Harisay, junior Ana da Silva, sophomores Charlotte Cattermole-Williams, Elsie Igberaese, Mia Anderson and freshman Elena Kulichenko are traveling for the women.

Graduate transfer Ty Kunzman, seniors Ziggy Zoller, Alencar Pereira and juniors Gavin Beverage and Garland complete the men's contingent slated to compete.

Weekly Honor For Kulichenko: Kulichenko was tabbed the SEC Women's Freshman of the Week following her performance at the Florida Relays last weekend.  This marks the first outdoor weekly honor for Kulichenko, a native of Odintsovo, Russia.  She earned an SEC indoor weekly honor earlier this year and was named the league Women's Indoor Freshman Field Athlete of the Year before earning First Team All-America honors in her featured event.

Kulichenko made her outdoor debut in Gainesville and cleared 1.84 meters (6 feet ½ inches) on her opening try for silver medal honors.  Alongside Jamari Drake who also hit that mark, Kulichenko moved into a tie for fifth on the 2022 national list and a tie for 10th on Georgia's all-time top-10 list.

Glimpse At Where This Season Will Take The Dogs: The Tennessee Relays mark the fourth of seven scheduled regular season outdoor meet weekends through the end of April, including the fifth-annual Torrin Lawrence Memorial (April 29-30) in Athens on the Spec Towns Track.

The SEC Championships will arrive on May 12-14 in Oxford, Miss., with the NCAA East Prelims scheduled for May 25-28 in Bloomington, Ind.  The 2022 NCAA Championships are in Eugene, Ore., on June 8-11.
