
Garland Sits Atop Decathlon Leaderboard At Tennessee Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- Georgia junior Kyle Garland surged into the top spot in the decathlon during day one of the Tennessee Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., on Thursday.
Garland posted a pair of personal bests and leads the decathlon through five of 10 events with 4,331 points.
When Do The Dogs Start Friday: Garland is slated to start the decathlon's final five events (110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1500m) starting at 11 a.m. on Friday. In addition to senior Ziggy Zoller long jumping at 4 p.m., redshirt sophomore Mia Anderson will compete in the women's shot put at the same time to crank up the day two action.
In all, eight Georgia competitors are scheduled to start in events on Friday.

The Lowdown: Garland kicked off his second collegiate decathlon by winning his heat in the 100m and taking third overall. He clocked a 10.88 and stood in third place by 47 points with 888 going into the long jump. Garland returned in the second event and reached 7.28 meters/23 feet, 10 ¾ inches on his third and final try to also take third in the long jump. He remained third by 116 points leading into the shot put.
Garland rocketed into the overall lead thanks to a big personal record in the shot put. Starting with a career best of 16.35m/53-7.75, he followed with a 16.65m/54-7.50 that won the event, scored him 891 points and put him into the overall lead by 69 points headed into the high jump. Garland used a third attempt clearance of 2.06m/6-9 in the high jump to add 859 points to his total and keep himself in the lead by 125 points.
The Philadelphia, Pa., native completed his opening day with another personal best in the 400m. He ran a 50.05 to take fifth in the event and hold his overall lead by 89 points.
Redshirt sophomore Elsie Igberaese dropped a personal record of 59.27m/194-5 in her hammer throw series to earn sixth place honors. One spot behind her was junior Ana da Silva (57.95m/190-1) and then came Mia Anderson, who finished with a career-best mark of 56.86m/186-6 on her third attempt for eighth.
On the men's side, senior Alencar Pereira quickly hit 62.80m/206-0 on his second try and finished seventh in the hammer.
