Georgia Shuts Out Purdue in 8-0 Run Rule Victory

February 20, 2022 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. – The 13th-ranked Georgia softball team earned a shutout, run-rule win over the Purdue Boilermakers to conclude the 15th Annual Red & Black Showcase Sunday at Jack Turner Stadium.

Georgia's eight runs came on 12 hits, led by a 3-for-3, two-RBI performance from redshirt-junior Jaiden Fields. Senior CJ Landrum picked up two hits and two runs at the bottom of Georgia's lineup. Sophomore Sydney Chambley drove in three runs with a home run and a sac fly in the contest.

Sophomore Madison Kerpics (3-1) earned her third win in the circle, working the complete five innings in the shutout, allowing just two hits. She struck out nine Boilermakers (6-4) in her outing.

The offense exploded for five runs in Georgia's half of the third inning. The scoring started with a two-run home run that cleared the seating in center off the bat of Chambley. Later, freshman Lyndi Rae Davis drove in Sydney Kuma to lengthen the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0. The next batter, Fields launched a two-run home run of her own to left center to conclude a five spot in the third for Georgia.

Ellie Armistead continued her strong weekend at the plate, leading off the fourth with a solo home run. The next batter, Landrum knocked a standup triple to the wall in right center then tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left off the bat of Chambley, 7-0 Bulldogs.

A leadoff walk and back-to-back singles from Fields and pinch hitter Jayda Kearney loaded the bases with no out in the fifth. Pinch hitter Mackenzie Puckett provided a single to center field to easily score Payden Bordeau and secure the 8-0 run rule victory over the Boilermakers.

Georgia is back in action Wednesday when the Bulldogs host Gardner-Webb at Jack Turner Stadium. First pitch against the Runnin' Bulldogs is set for 5 p.m., EST. Kids 12 and under will have the opportunity to run the bases following the game.

Head Coach Tony Baldwin
On key takeaways from the tournament overall…
"I thought that we got a little bit better in our discipline and our ability to do the things that it takes to play winning softball. The outcomes are a byproduct of doing things the right way. Sometimes in this game, you can do a lot of things the right way and it does not go your way because the other teams try and do the same thing. I thought we got a little bit more disciplined as the weekend went on. When we can force the other team to throw the ball in the strike zone, we have a pretty good offense.  I'm proud of them getting better at that. I thought Madison [Kerpics] gave us a really good start today. Early on, I felt like she was nibbling a little bit too much, giving a few too many pitches per batter. As the game went on, she really started attacking them and letting her stuff work and was a lot more successful."

On keeping Madison Kerpics in the entire game…
"Well, she didn't throw yesterday. We had a number of girls throw and get innings yesterday, so she was fresh. Just felt like she needed the work. Had it gone the full distance, we were prepared to get someone else in there for the next inning. It's a balance between building up their arm strength and getting them the work that they need in that environment and keeping them fresh. We felt good about her. She was throwing well. She was controlling the game, and then, it ended early."

Redshirt-Junior Jaiden Fields
On the mindset going into a game when not starting…
"I think it's being ready to go because you never know, especially early in the season. We're trying to switch out a lot of different people. Luckily for us, everyone has been prepared. Everyone has been producing, so just being ready to go. Also, just Coach Tony [Baldwin] just trusting us too is important."

On the explosiveness of the offense…
"Everything we do is for the team, so we're just trying to score runners, get base hits. The homeruns, they just happen to come. We have a lot of powerful girls. It's just base hits, missile middle. We just try and hit the ball in the middle and get the runners around. That's our main goal is to be disciplined in that and everything that we do."
