Georgia Blanks Gardner-Webb Behind Rogers’ One-Hitter, 6-0
February 23, 2022 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. – The 15th-ranked Georgia softball team shut out Gardner-Webb Wednesday evening 6-0 behind a one-hitter from sophomore right-hander Britton Rogers at Jack Turner Stadium.
Rogers (4-0) went the distance in the circle, working seven complete. She struck out a career-best 11 hitters with no walks and took a perfect game bid into the seventh, losing it on a one-out single to center.
The offense scored six runs on nine hits. Sydney Chambley and Jaiden Fields each picked up two hits while Sara Mosley and Jayda Kearney drove in two runs each in the midweek contest.
Georgia (10-2) jumped on the board in the second inning with a five spot. The inning started with a triple off the bat of senior Lacey Fincher. She tagged up and scored on a line drive sac fly from Kearney to put Georgia ahead 1-0. With Ellie Armistead on second, CJ Landrum bunted her way aboard. On the play, a wild throw allowed Armistead to score. Landrum raced home on a triple off the wall in right from Savana Sikes, making it a three-run lead. After a walk to Chambley, Mosley drove in both runners with a double into the right center gap, bringing the tally to 5-0 after two.
Fields led off the third with a double to left. She took third on a throwing error from the left fielder on the play then tagged up and touched home on Kearney's second sac fly of the game, 6-0.
Rogers kept the Runnin' Bulldogs (5-5) at bay the remainder of the game, never letting a Gardner-Webb runner past first base.
Up next, the Bulldogs host Bryant and North Carolina in the Georgia Classic this weekend at Jack Turner Stadium. The six-game tournament begins Friday. Admission to all games is free.
Head Coach Tony Baldwin
Opening Statement…
"I'm just really proud of how the girls came out. Midweek game, first time going through the different routine. I thought we started off really sharp. I thought we strung together some quality at bats. I thought our discipline in terms of what we were swinging at was on par tonight of what we're trying to do. Really the story of the night was Britton [Rogers]. She had a really good workout yesterday and was excited to see that come into today. I thought she was in command the whole time. She had all of her pitches working, and again, just excited about the way she threw the ball."
On what the team will carry into the weekend…
"Obviously, we just have to keep working on our thing and trying to get better, do simple better. We don't have to add more to what we're doing. We just need to continue to grow our ability to stay disciplined, do the things that the game requires to be successful. Today, we were seven-for-seven for keeping the leadoff hitter off base on their team. Every time we scored, we went out and put up a zero. Those are the things that lead to winning softball, and we just want to keep growing our ability to keep executing those things."
Sophomore Britton Rogers
On her 11-strikeout performance and what was working for her tonight…
"Tonight, I feel like I really attacked the zone. I started early and often, pounding with my screwball and my curveball, setting up the side-to-side pitches. Just doing what I do."
On her takeaways from the night and how that will translate into the weekend…
"Tonight was something that I've been wanting to do, starting early and often with the strikes. That's my game plan from now on. I'm going to take that into this weekend. Pounding early and just getting in the attack mode against the hitters."
