Bulldogs’ Win Streak Snapped in Battle Against No. 20 Wildcats, 3-0

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia women's volleyball team saw its five-match win streak snapped Wednesday, falling to 20th-ranked Kentucky in straight sets at Stegeman Coliseum (25-27, 23-25, 21-25).
Georgia now sits at 17-6 on the season and 8-4 in SEC play.
Senior outside hitter Kacie Evans put up 20 kills in three sets with a .425 hitting percentage. She fell just short of a double-double, registering nine digs to co-lead the team. As a team, Georgia hit .302 against Kentucky.
On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore libero Bailey Cox co-led with Evans with nine digs. Junior Sophie Fischer put up five blocks against her former team while senior Meghan Froemming added four. Georgia out blocked the Wildcats 8-5 in the match.
The Bulldogs and Wildcats (15-6, 10-2) began the match point-for-point until a 4-1 Kentucky run opened a 13-10 lead, prompting a Georgia timeout. Down four, Georgia rattled off six-straight points to go ahead 19-17 and exhaust both Kentucky timeouts. Kentucky responded with three straight and pulled ahead 23-21. Georgia halted the Wildcat offense and worked to draw set point 24-23. Kentucky held on to take the set 27-25. Evans put up eight kills on a .538 hitting clip in the first set.
Georgia fell behind early in the second set, going down 5-1 until a 6-0 run erased the deficit and put Georgia ahead 7-5. Knotted at eight, Georgia won four of the next five rallies to go up 12-9, forcing a Wildcat timeout. Georgia held on until Kentucky knotted the set at 19. Georgia responded with three straight to force the Wildcats' final timeout. After the break, Kentucky put together three points to recapture the lead, 22-21. Georgia sided out to tie it at 22, but the Wildcats held on to take the set 25-23.
A 5-1 run propelled Kentucky ahead to an 8-4 lead in the third. Down 13-9, the Bulldogs stung together five-straight points to go ahead 14-13 and forcing a Wildcat timeout. Georgia opened its lead to four at 19-15 before a final Kentucky break. After the timeout, five straight from the Wildcats flipped the lead once again. Tied at 20, Kentucky took five of the next six points to secure the match 25-21.
Georgia hosts Arkansas Sunday at Stegeman Coliseum. First serve between the Bulldogs and Razorbacks is set for 4 p.m. live on SEC Network.

"It was a tough battle. We were in a position to win in all three sets, kind of the second third of all three sets. Kentucky, obviously, pulled away. It was a real hard-fought battle on both sides."
On what the highlights of the match...
"I thought Kacie Evans and Sophie Fischer were forces offensively. I thought our blocking picked up a ton. We just started getting better in transition. We started getting cleaner and getting some better swings."
