Obst Earns National, SEC Athlete Of The Week Honors

March 23, 2021 | Track & Field

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia senior Marie-Therese Obst has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Women's Athlete of the Week as well as the Southeastern Conference Women's Co-Field Athlete of the Week following the season-opening Yellow Jacket Invitational, according to separate announcements.

This marked the first USTFCCCA weekly honor outdoors for the Lady Bulldogs since collegiate record holder Keturah Orji earned the honor in back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018.  This marked Obst's first SEC weekly honor.

Obst, a native of Oslo, Norway, lifted her fifth attempt in the javelin 195 feet to win by more than 63 feet at the Yellow Jacket meet.  Competing for the first time since the 2019 NCAA East Prelims because of last year's season cancelation, Obst topped the 14-year-old school record (183-11, Krista Woodward) and became the No. 10 all-time collegiate performer.

Obst is the current collegiate national leader and ranked No. 10 mark in the world this year.  There have only been three longer marks before the NCAA Championships nationally over the last 10 seasons.  She also had a mark of 190-7 in her series over the weekend, which also would have been a national leader and school record.
