No. 19 Georgia Blanks Georgia Tech, 11-0
February 28, 2021 | Softball
ATLANTA – The 19th-ranked Georgia softball team shut out in-state rival Georgia Tech 11-0 in five innings Sunday at Mewborn Field in Atlanta.
With the win, Georgia has widened its winning streak to 13 games over the Yellow Jackets and have won seven-straight on the road. Georgia concludes the week 4-0 with wins over Kennesaw State, Georgia State, and Miami (Ohio).
Junior Savana Sikes recorded a four-hit, four-RBI day with three runs scores. Her four hits and three runs were career highs. She finished with two singles, a triple, and a home run. Junior Lacey Fincher and freshman Ellie Armistead also knocked home runs for Georgia Sunday.
Graduate Mary Wilson Avant (6-0) pitched four shutout innings in her start. She struck out five Yellow Jackets while allowing no walks and held a no-hit bid through three innings.
Georgia began the game putting the first two hitters on base. Both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball then a wild pitch allowed sophomore Sydney Kuma to score. Fincher followed by sending her sixth home run of the season over the wall in center to put Georgia ahead 3-0 very early.
With bases full of Bulldogs and no out in the top of the fourth, Sikes provided a bases-clearing triple ripped down the right field line, doubling Georgia's lead to 6-0. Sikes immediately tagged up and scored on a sac fly off the bat of senior Mackenzie Puckett to deep center. With a runner on, an error by the third baseman extended the inning for Sydney Chambley who dropped a base hit in left center to plate both runners and bring the Bulldogs' lead to 9-0.
E. Artmistead lengthened Georgia's lead further in the fifth by hitting her first career home run, a one-out solo shot to left. Two batters later, Sikes sent a solo home run of her own to left to bring the tally to 11-0.
Senior Lauren Mathis entered to close the game for Georgia in the bottom of the inning.
The Bulldogs will host Alabama State in a doubleheader Wednesday, March 3 beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Jack Turner Stadium.

On Sunday's game…
"Today was a fun day. Savana [Sikes], who I like to call Clutch-ana, was awesome today at the plate going 4-for-4. Just outstanding with her approach and taking care of business with her bat. It was just a really big day for her. Mary Wilson [Avant] was outstanding in the circle, setting the tone for us and mixing her pitches and she was really effective. Lauren [Mathis] did a great job in the close and the team looked great on defense. Up and down the order, I'm proud of the team for getting runs early in the game and making adjustments midway and pounding it home in the end."
On a 4-0 week against three in-state opponents…
"I'm proud of this team for battling. Never in my career have we driven over one day, played two games that day, drove home, then driven somewhere else the next day to play another game. I'm proud of them for being resilient, working the process, and taking care of business."
