Dawgs Battle No. 4 Texas, Fall 4-3

February 08, 2020 | Men's Tennis

AUSTIN, Texas — The 18th-ranked Georgia men's tennis team challenged the No. 4 Texas Longhorns in a Saturday showdown in Austin. The Bulldogs earned three singles wins in a 4-3 defeat.

Facing the No. 2 individual nationally in Texas' Yuya Ito, sophomore Trent Bryde highlighted the match by earning the highest-ranked singles win of his career with a 7-6(1), 6-4 victory. Fellow sophomore Blake Croyder won on court five, and freshman Baptiste Anselmo's insert into the lineup resulted in a three-set win on court six.

"I could not be prouder of our team for its fight, toughness and teamwork," head coach Manuel Diaz said. "Texas was a bit better today. Three freshmen and three sophomores grew a ton today and we are disappointed in the close loss, but we are also encouraged about our future. We've got two weeks to get ready for the most important part of our season and we are undeterred."

In doubles, the tandem of Bryde and freshman Tyler Zink battled against the No. 15 duo of Ito and Christian Sigsgaard, falling 6-4. Shortly afterwards, the 16th-ranked pair of Croyder and Philip Henning tied up doubles with a 6-4 decision, improving to 13-7 as a pair this season and 3-1 in duals matches. Freshman Erik Grevelius and senior Robert Loeb lost a close match on court three to concede the doubles point.

Turning to singles, Croyder earned the first Bulldog victory of the day by defeating Chih Chi Huang 7-5, 6-3. He remains undefeated in duals matches with a 5-0 record.

Bryde followed up with a win to tie the score at 2-2, but not before a thrilling first set in which Bryde edged Ito 7-1 in a tiebreaker. Heading into the match, Ito boasted a 21-1 singles record and was 12-0 against ranked opponents.

The final three singles matches each went to three sets. On court two, Henning went blow-for-blow with Sigsgaard, the 12th-ranked individual nationally, falling 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Zink battled fellow freshman Siem Woldeab, ranked No. 37, but was edged out 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

Freshman Baptiste Anselmo earned the first duals singles victory of his young career in the final match of the day. He downed Cleeve Harper 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4 to solidify a 4-3 narrow defeat.

The Bulldogs return to action against Florida Atlantic at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Feb. 24. Follow along on Georgiadogs.com as well as Twitter (@UGATennis) and Instagram (@ugatennis) for updates.
