Georgia Surges To Second In Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate
October 27, 2020 | Men's Golf
FRANKLIN, Tenn. --- On the strength of the lowest round of the day, the Georgia men's golf team came in second on Tuesday in the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate.
Playing the Vanderbilt Legends Club's par-71, 7,221-yard layout, the Bulldogs carded a 13-under 271 in the final round to land at 34-under 818 for the tournament. Host Vanderbilt, which held an 11-stroke lead over the Bulldogs heading into Tuesday, claimed team honors at 39-under 813. Texas A&M placed third at 29-under 823.
Tuesday's 34-under figure matched the fifth-lowest total in school history, set at the 2019 Clemson Invitational. The Georgia record is 42-under, established in 2000.
Senior Davis Thompson and sophomore Eli Scott paced the Bulldogs on Tuesday as each signed for a 4-under 67. Junior Trent Phillips added a 3-under 68, followed by fifth-year player Spencer Ralston at 2-under 69. Sophomore Connor Creasy had Georgia's non-counting score of even-par 71.
Thompson placed fifth with a total of 11-under 202, just three shy of Arkansas' Julian Perico (199). Thompson's card on Tuesday listed five birdies, including three of his last four holes and four overall on the back nine. He came in fourth in the season-opening Blessings Collegiate Invitational earlier this month and now has a season stroke average of 69.17.
Creasy earned the second top-20 finish of his career as he came in 15th with a personal-best 7-under 206. Ralston claimed 18th at 6-under 207, followed by Phillips and Scott both at even-par 210.
"I am very pleased with the way we played today and really for the entire tournament," Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. "We didn't quite meet our goal of chasing down Vanderbilt, but we made one heck of a run. If we play like that each time we tee it up, we're going to be in contention. I am happy with our effort and can't wait to see how we build on it moving forward."
As with Georgia's other fall tournaments, the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate field consisted entirely of the 14 Southeastern Conference teams.
Georgia will wrap up the fall Nov. 9-10 in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
