VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. --- The Georgia men's golf team finished as tri-champions along with Auburn and Vanderbilt on Tuesday in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
Playing Old Overton Club's par-70, 7,204-yard track on Tuesday, the three teams finished regulation at 19-under 821. The Bulldogs capped the tournament with a 3-under 277 in the final round.
Senior Davis Thompson and sophomore Nicolas Cassidy paced the Bulldogs with 3-under 68s in the final round. Junior Trent Phillips signed for a 2-under 69, while fifth-year player Spencer Ralston posted a 1-over 72. Sophomore Connor Creasy had the Bulldogs' non-counting tally of 2-over 73.
Phillips came in fourth individually at 8-under 202, four shy of co-medalists Jackson Suber of Ole Miss and Ford Clegg of Mississippi State (198). Thompson placed sixth at 7-under 203, while Ralston and Cassidy landed in 19th at 1-under 209. Creasy wound up at 3-over 213.
"We were expecting a thrilling finish and we sure got one," Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. "To come down the stretch with two very talented squads was a tremendous experience for us. There is no question this will help all of us down the road. I was proud of our team for managing the ups and downs of the day. It always feels great to win, and this one is no different."
The win is the 65th for the Bulldogs under Haack, whose career began in 1996-97. Haack has led Georgia to at least one win in 21 of his 25 seasons, including two national championships and eight SEC titles.
As with Georgia's other fall tournaments, the field consisted entirely of the 14 Southeastern Conference teams.
Georgia's spring schedule is unofficial at this time, but the Bulldogs are expected to resume play in February.
