March 31, 2019 | Softball
AUBURN, Ala. – In Sunday's series finale, #12 Georgia softball dropped a 9-5 decision to #14 Auburn at Jane B. Moore Field.
At the plate, the Bulldogs scattered 11 hits, led by two-hit days by freshman Lacey Fincher and sophomore Tyler Armistead. Everyone in the lineup earned a hit in Sunday's tilt.
Lauren Mathis (6-3) pitched four innings in her start, suffering the loss. She allowed three runs while striking out five. Alley Cutting relieved Mathis in the fifth, allowing six runs. Kylie Bass closed the game, working the final two-thirds of an inning.
Auburn was the first to touch home in the contest. The Tigers used three-straight singles to start the second inning to push in a run, capped by an RBI single by Justus Perry. Mathis limited the damage, stranding the bases loaded in the inning.
With two down in the top of the third inning, Alyssa DiCarlo singled through the left side followed by a walk to Fincher. Mahlena O'Neal singled back up the middle to drive in DiCarlo and knot the game at a run apiece, 1-1.
The Tigers regained the lead in the bottom half of the third with an RBI double by Brittany Maresette, 2-1.
A solo shot by Fincher retied the game, 2-2, in the fifth. It was Fincher's eighth home run of her rookie campaign.
Auburn's Alyssa Rivera led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot of her own to regain the lead, 3-2. Another run came in to score in the inning, widening the lead to two, 4-2.
The Tigers further lengthened the lead in the sixth, plating five runs and bringing the Auburn advantage to seven, 9-2.
Fincher led off the seventh with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, then scored on a passed ball, 9-3. After an infield single by Ciara Bryan, Alysen Febrey knocked a two-run home run to center, cutting the Auburn lead to 9-5. The late-inning lead was too much to overcome, falling in the end.
Georgia returns to Athens to host Texas A&M in a three-game series next weekend. The series will begin Friday at 6 p.m. at Jack Turner Stadium.
