Bulldogs Blank Jackets, 4-0

ATHENS, Ga. — The No. 23-ranked Georgia men's tennis team earned a 4-0 shutout win over Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon at the Lindsay Hopkins Indoor Courts. The Bulldogs won a tight double point and then a trio of three-set singles matches en route to the victory.

"I thought we did a great job of reacting when we were under pressure," head coach Manny Diaz said. "If was a terrific match. I think both teams played outstanding tennis. In the doubles, it was anybody's game. In singles, when we lost the first set on three courts, I thought we were more resourceful. We didn't question ourselves. We played with conviction and confidence even when we were in difficult situations. I think we showed a lot of maturity. That's the biggest difference in this match. We're starting to gain a little bit of confidence."

Georgia has now won 32 of the last 33 meetings and owns a 65-9 all-time record against the Yellow Jackets. The Bulldogs have won eight straight matches in the series.

Georgia (1-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead by winning two of nip-and-tuck doubles matches.

Walker Duncan and Philip Henning rallied from an early break down to break back and then break again in the set's 12th game to win at No. 2 doubles, 7-5. Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski almost finished off doubles play soon thereafter; however, Tech fought off two sets points at 6-5 to force a tiebreaker. The Jackets withstood two more match points before Zielinski served out the breaker at 9-7. No. 3 singles was suspended at 6-6 and 6-6 in the tiebreaker.

All of the first four singles matches were three-set affairs, with Tech taking the first set at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 before Georgia rallied to earn a 3-0 lead. First, Henning bounced back to top Cole Gromley, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3. Zielinski, who is ranked No. 2 nationally, dispatched Phillip Gresk, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2.

Loeb clinched the shutout with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 decision over Andrew Li at No. 4.

The Bulldogs improved to 1-2 on the year after dropping both of their matches in the ITA Kick-Off last weekend.

"Even though we didn't have a great weekend last week, I thought we competed well," Diaz said. "Here, we were able to transition when we needed to, and we were able to stay physical. I think we turned a corner today."

The Bulldogs will be back in action next Sunday when they face No. 2 Ohio State in Columbus.
