ATHENS, Ga. —- The Georgia women's golf team will open defense of its team title at The Gold Rush in Seal Beach, Calif., on Monday. The Bulldogs won last year's event by five shots, largely due to having four individuals who recorded top-10 finishes.

This year's tournament will feature 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday on the par-72, 6115-yard layout of Old Ranch Country Club.

"We're playing well," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We need to compete. We're still trying to figure out a little bit about who we are. I'm excited to get back out there. It's just a chance to hopefully be near the lead and see how we handle it. Eventually this year, if you're going to accomplish something, you're going to have to be in the lead or chasing really close. We are confident. We believe we can go out and have a chance on Tuesday to do what the men did (this week in Puerto Rico), bring home a title."

The Bulldogs' lineup is based on their individual finishes at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic two weeks ago, with Harmie Constantino, who finished ninth there, occupying the top spot. Georgia's playing five also will feature junior Gabriela Coello, who finished seventh at last year's Gold Rush; freshman Jenny Bae; freshman Jo-Hua Hung; and senior Rinko Mitsunaga.

"I feel really excited to just get back out there and play again," Constantino said. "I felt good about my putting. I was making a lot of putts last week. My drives weren't so good. I just changed my driver so I'm making that adjustment.

"I think everyone is working really hard," Constantino added. "We come out here right of class and work hard. Our team has gotten closer and closer throughout the last six weeks. That's one of the main reasons to me that our team is doing really well, because we've gotten closer and more comfortable with each other."

The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 38, the second-highest team in the field behind No. 36 San Jose State. Also competing will be Brigham Young, Cal State Fullerton, Central Arkansas, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Kentucky, Long Beach State, Minnesota, Sacramento State, Santa Clara and UNLV.

Georgia finished eighth in Puerto Rico two weeks ago, where in addition to Constantino's top-10 finish, Coello and Bae also notched top-20s.

"It was nice to play a tournament to see where we're really good and just where we need to clean a few little things up," Brewer said. "That's the thing. We're just trying to do some cleaning. We're not trying to rebuild our house. We're just trying to get that spring touch. It's nice to compete and get more tournament tested."

Monday's play will begin with a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m. ET. The Bulldogs will be paired with tournament host Long Beach State and UNLV, teeing off on holes Nos. 1-3. Live scoring will be available throughout both days of competition at golfstat.com.
