DURHAM, N.C.--- Despite taking the same number of shots on goal, the Georgia soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision in exhibition play to No. 3 Duke on Thursday night at Koskinen Stadium.
The game marked the first time head coach Billy Lesesne and assistant coach Katie Ely returned to Duke since being a part of the Blue Devil coaching staff. Lesesne was a 14-year member of Robbie Church's staff, including spending his last 11 as the associate head coach. Ely was Duke's goalkeepers coach from 2011-12, which included the 2011 run to the NCAA College Cup Finals.
"Duke came off of a final four appearance last year and are ranked third to start this season," Lesesne said. "We're playing a team that is going to poke holes in what we do and give us ideas in ways that we can grow. I think we got a lot out of this exhibition. We were able to, at times, figure out things defensively and offensively we had some combination play that was able to create some opportunities. Overall it was a really good experience for us."
Tonight's starting eleven featured five new Bulldogs, including four freshmen (Emory Wegener, Abby Boyan, Bella Ponzi, Cecily Stoute) and one graduate transfer (Kerry Manion). Twenty-six players saw time on the field during the full 90 minutes of the game. All three Georgia goalkeepers saw time in goal, playing about 30 minutes each.
Sophomore Delaney Erwin led the team in shots with three of the Bulldogs' nine.
It was the Blue Devils with the first strike, scoring in the fifth minute of play and carrying the 1-0 lead to the locker room at half time.
Duke extended its lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute of action on only its second shot of the half, before capitalizing once more for the 3-0 win.
Regular season action kicks off on Friday, August 17 on the road against Georgetown at a tournament hosted by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. The home opener for the Bulldogs is scheduled for Friday, August 24 against Indiana at 6 p.m. Admission to the Turner Soccer Complex is free.
