Georgia Opens 2018 Season in Blacksburg

August 16, 2018 | Soccer

NOTES

ATHENS, Ga. ---
The University of Georgia soccer team will begin the 2018 season in the Virginia Tech Tournament in Blacksburg, Virginia.  The Bulldogs will face Georgetown on Friday, August 17 at 5 p.m., before playing San Diego on Sunday, August 19 at 11 a.m.

This is the first meeting in program history against both opponents for the Bulldogs.

Historically, Georgia is 14-4-5 all-time in season openers. The Bulldogs fell to Wake Forest, 1-0, in the season opener last year but bounced back to defeat High Point, 1-0, before the weekend was over.  Overall, the Bulldogs are winners of seven of their last 13 season openers dating back to 2005, and have outscored opponents by a count of 23-2 in those games.

Earlier this week senior Sydney Shultis and sophomores Kayla Bruster, Caroline Chipman, and Reagan Glisson were named to the Southeastern Conference Preseason Watch List. This is the first preseason honor for all four Bulldogs.

Georgetown is ranked No. 22 to start the season after finishing 14-3-4 and winning both the BIG EAST Regular Season and Championship titles for the first time in program history. The squad tied the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons, 0-0, in double overtime in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament but failed to advance in penalty kicks, 2-1.

San Diego finished third in the West Coast Conference last year – its highest finish since 2011, when the team tied for the conference championship. The Toreros were picked to finish fourth in the WCC women's soccer preseason coaches poll this season.

The home opener for the Bulldogs is scheduled for Friday, August 24 against Indiana at 6 p.m. Admission to the Turner Soccer Complex is free.
