Georgia Falls to No. 22 Georgetown in Season Opener

BOX SCORE

BLACKSBURG, Va. ---
Georgia soccer fell 1-0 to No. 22 Georgetown in the season opener at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Virginia on Friday evening.

"Georgetown is a very good team and I thought it was a great opener for us," head coach Billy Lesesne said. "They're going to challenge us.  I thought we defended well as a team.  Offensively, we did not get into our rhythm until late.  When we were down a goal we started to get more direct and more passionate about winning balls. We created a couple opportunities at the end but were unable to put one away. A good team is going to put you under some pressure and that was good for us to see. For a young team we handled that well."

Five freshmen Bulldogs debuted in the starting lineup.  Emory Wegener started in goal and Cecily Stoute on defense, while Abby Boyan, Weldon Kolker, and Bella Ponzi played at midfield.

Two additional freshmen saw time on the field for Georgia, including Dani Murguia and Kristen Edmond.  Sophomore Jessie Denney and junior Keely Cartrett also played their first minutes as Bulldogs.

Georgia saw opportunity early in the game.  At the eight minute mark, sophomore Reagan Glisson sailed a corner kick in to sophomore Katie Higgins whose header hit the crossbar.  The Bulldogs took three more shots in the first 45 minutes of play, but the Hoyas held a 1-0 advantage at half time.

Georgia's defense held Georgetown from extending its lead throughout the second half. Wegener made seven saves in her debut at goalkeeper for the Bulldogs.

Georgia continues play in Blacksburg against San Diego on Sunday, August 19 at 11 a.m. This will be the first meeting in program history between the Bulldogs and Toreros.

The home opener for the Bulldogs is scheduled for Friday, August 24 against Indiana at 6 p.m. on the SEC Network.  Admission to the Turner Soccer Complex is free.
