#5 Bulldogs Fall to Tigers 5-1 in Game Two
April 07, 2018 | Softball
ATHENS, Ga. — The fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs softball team fell to the Missouri Tigers Saturday evening at Jack Turner Stadium.
Sophomore pitcher Amanda Ablan started her fifth game of the season tossing five and a third innings against the Missouri Tigers (21-20, 4-10). Ablan had four strikeouts, allowed six hits and two runs. Ablan is now 2-2 on the season after suffering the loss in the circle. Freshman pitcher Lauren Mathis threw one inning in relief followed by freshman pitcher Keara Napoli who worked two-thirds of an inning in her third appearance this season.
Ablan made a statement in the second, pitching around three runners on base with no outs to quell the scoring opportunity for the Tigers.
The Tigers took the lead 1-0 in the third after a single from Regan Nash scored pinch runner Abby George. After three scoreless innings for Georgia (34-5, 10-4), sophomore third baseman Jordan Doggett hit an RBI groundout, scoring junior shortstop Alyssa DiCarlo to tie the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the fourth.
Georgia's defense came to perform in the fifth with a three-up, three-down inning. Sophomore centerfielder Ciara Bryan snagged a ball to provide the first out followed by a hard line drive caught without hesitation by Doggett and a diving play by DiCarlo up the middle.
Missouri regrouped in the sixth to push two past the plate and take back the lead. Brooke Wilmes hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Rylee Pierce followed by a single by Callie Martin that scored Nash.
Cayla Kessinger from the Tigers hit a two-run home run to widen the lead over Georgia, 5-1.
Georgia is now tied with Missouri, 1-1 in the series. This will be the third-straight weekend that the Bulldogs will play a rubber game in game three of the series.
Georgia and Missouri face off tomorrow at Jack Turner Stadium for game three of the series. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m., EDT.
Associate Head Coach Tony Baldwin
"A game like this is just life in the SEC. I am really proud of the girls and thought we had a great mindset and attitude. We made some unbelievable plays on defense. Tonight their pitcher did a great job of keeping us off balance. We left some opportunities when there were runners in scoring position but these are all things that we have done well on earlier in the season. Tonight you have to tip your hat to the other team. They put a lot of really nice swings together and got the better end tonight."
