ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia women's golf team posted a 2-under 286 in Saturday's final round of the 46th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the UGA Golf Course. The Bulldogs completed the 54-hole event in fourth place, trailing only three top-5 teams, at 7-over 871.
"I'm excited we were able to shoot under par on our home golf course to finish the regular season," head coach Josh Brewer said.
Georgia's effort on Sunday was the second-best in the field.
"It's been building for a while," junior Rinko Mitsunaga said. "Everyone is doing really well. Our scores didn't perfectly reflect how well we're playing, but I definitely think we're on the right path. There's a lot of good golf out there. We have little bits and pieces that we need to work on, but I think we'll be ready by nationals."
Mitsunaga and Jillian Hollis paced Georgia with tallies of 3-under 69 and 1-under 71, respectively. The Bulldogs' additional counting rounds were a pair of 73 from Gabriela Coello and Isabella Skinner. Paula Neira Garcia shot 81, Georgia's drop score. Freshmen Stephanie Carras and Elisa Yang competed as individuals. Carras signed for an 80 on Saturday, while Yang shot 83.
"There were some really positive things from a lot of people," Brewer said. " Jillian continues to play amazing golf. Rinko took the step today to shoot 3-under. Bella's day is coming. She's been under par multiple times and eventually, she will bust through. Why not do it in the postseason? Gaby and Paula have had a lot of good rounds this spring."
Individually, Hollis tied for third overall at 6-under 210, a shot off the pace of Alabama co-medalists Cheyenne Knight and Lauren Stephenson.
Mitsunaga finished at 3-over 219 and tied for 17th place, Skinner shot 220 and tied for 21st, Coello finished at 225 and tied for 31st, Neira Garcia posted a 233 and tied for 46th, Yang completed the tourney at 235 and tied for 52nd and Carras shot 247 and placed 67th.
No. 2 Alabama completed its wire-to-wire team victory at 849. No. 3 Arkansas and No. 5 Duke tied for second at 865, followed by the Bulldogs at 871, Baylor at 880, Kennesaw State at 883, Daytona State at 889, Louisville at 890, Ole Miss at 895, No. 12 Florida at 898, Denver at 915 and Kansas at 943.
Mitsunaga played the front half of the layout at 2-under. She went birdie-bogey at No. 2 and No. 3 before sandwiching a bogey at No. 8 with birdies at No. 6, No. 7 and No. 9. A bogey at No. 13 brough her to 1-under, but Mitsunaga bounced back with consecutive birdies at No. 14 and No. 15 before finishing with three straight pars.
"I was hitting it really well," Mitsunaga said. "I almost holed it out from the fairway about four times. I just gained so much confidence with my driver. That's something I've been struggling with. I didn't miss a fairway, and I was so happy to be out there. That's the biggest difference. I'm so excited to be out there and be a part of our team and representing our school."
Hollis turned at 3-under with birdies at No. 2, No. 7 and No. 9 to move to 8-under overall and atop the individual leaderboard. She gave those strokes back with bogeys at No. 12, No. 16 and No. 17 before closing with a birdie at No. 18.
Hollis continued her amazing run through the spring. Over four events, she is a combined 21-under par. Hollis notched a pair of individual wins at the 3M Augusta Invitational and the PING/ASU Invitational and has two more top-5 efforts.
With this weekend's effort, Hollis lowered her season stroke average to 70.56, nearly a full stroke per round better than Marta Silva Zamora's school record of 71.52 en route to winning 2011 National Player of the Year honors.
"It's fun to watch," Brewer said. "We're seeing something special. I hope people realize that. I just want five more weeks of it."
The Bulldogs will return to action in four days when they open competition at the SEC Championships at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham. This year's tournament has changed to a format combining stroke and match play. The league's 14 teams will play 54 holes of stroke play on Wednesday-Friday, which will determine the SEC medalist. The top-eight teams from stroke play will then advance to a seeded match play bracket to be contested on Saturday and Sunday to determine the team champion.
