BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Georgia posted a 306 in Wednesday's opening round of the SEC Women's Golf Championship. The Bulldogs are tied with No. 20 Auburn for seventh in the team field at the Greystone Golf and Country Club.
Georgia received five steady rounds, with all five golfers shooting 78 or better. The Bulldogs discarded a 78 on a gusty day that the average drop score of the other 13 teams was 81.3.
"Everyone was in it all day," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We've done that all spring. It's kind of been this team's 'M.O.' We missed that one (low) round that we've found, but we know it's out there. Any one of the five can do it. We're excited to go out and try to win tomorrow."
Jillian Hollis and Rinko Mitsunaga led the Bulldogs with a pair of 75s on Wednesday, which placed them 18th on the individual leaderboard. Georgia's other counting scores were a duo of 78s, the tally signed for by Gabriela Coello, Paula Neira Garcia and Isabella Skinner. That trio is tied for 38th overall.
"Obviously, there were tough conditions out there," Mitsunaga said. "It's something that we've all been practicing for so it's nothing crazy new to us. It's the postseason so things are a little different. Team-wise, everyone is going to start focusing a little more and drill in. I'm glad that we're the underdogs right now. We've always been good at being underdogs."
Mitsunaga turned at 1-under and tied atop the individual leaderboard before playing the back nine at 4-over.
"I had a good front nine," Mitsunaga said. "I knew the back nine was going to be a little tougher. I just tried to play smart. I knew the wind was probably going to pick up as the day went on, but for me, the back nine always plays a little be tougher. One thing I try to do is go as low as I can on the front nine. Overall, I think we all did pretty well for the way the conditions were. It was a good start."
No. 2 Alabama shot 2-under 286 to grab a five-shot lead on the team field. Trailing the Crimson Tide is No. 10 South Carolina at 291, No. 24 Vanderbilt at 296, No. 13 Florida at 298, No. 3 Arkansas at 299, Missouri at 304, the Bulldogs and Tigers at 306, Mississippi State at 308, Kentucky at 309, Tennessee at 310, Texas A&M at 312, LSU at 313 and Ole Miss at 316.
Alabama's Kristen Gillman posted a 3-under 69 and atop the individual leaderboard by one stroke ahead of the quartet of Maria Fassi and Dylan Kim of Arkansas, Ainhoa Olarra of South Carolina and Louise Yu of Vanderbilt.
"It's the postseason, and for three of them, they're making their postseason debut," Brewer said. "You expect a little bit of excitement, wanting to do really well for Georgia. We battled through all day. You have to play six rounds to win a championship here. One of those six, you're probably going to be a little bit off. I think today was our off day."
The Bulldogs will be paired with Auburn and Mississippi State on Thursday, teeing off in waves from No. 1 between 8:00-8:40 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
After Friday's third round of stroke play, the SEC medalist will be determined and the top-eight teams on the leaderboard will advance to a match play bracket to decide the league's team champion. The match play competition will include the quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday and the championship on Sunday.
