Orlando, Fla. -- Buoyed by four under-par individual efforts, the Georgia women's golf team fired a 10-under 278 in the opening round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate. The Bulldogs are in second place in the elite field which features 11 of the top-17 teams from last season's final Golfweek rankings.
Sunday's effort tied the third-best single-day tally in school history, three shots off the 13-under record the Bulldogs set in the second round of last year's Mason Rudolph Championship.
"We're off to a great start," head coach Josh Brewer said. "The golf course is set up for birdies, but you still have to hit the shots and makes the putts. They did that today. It's kind of a carry over from our qualifying. We had a very competitive qualifier with great scores, and we continued with the same thing today. All I want at any tournament is a chance in the final round. Step one is done. We've put ourselves in a good position."
Bailey Tardy led the Bulldogs with a birdie-free, 5-under 67 that equaled her career-low loop at Georgia. Additional counters included a pair of 2-under 70s from Gabriela Coello and Rinko Mitsunaga, as well as a 1-under 71 from Jillian Hollis.
Overall, Tardy is tied for fourth, Coello and Mitsunaga are tied for 14th, Hollis is tied for 22nd and Mary Ellen Shuman, who shot 76, is 55th.
Tardy used birdies at No. 3, No. 8, No. 12, No. 15 and No. 17 to match the 5-under 67s she shot in the second and third rounds of the Windy City Collegiate last fall.
"Bailey had a great start," Brewer said. "I think it's even more impressive when you consider she kind of has a target on her back now from the things she's accomplished in the last year."
Coello also posted five birdies, doing so at No. 2, No. 6, No. 14, No. 16 and No. 18; however, she also bogeyed No. 7, No. 12 and No. 17.
"For Gabby to shoot 2-under in this field should give her confidence," Brewer said. "It also tells her teammates that we can count on her at crunch time when we need someone to play great and give us a score. It's a great sign for our team and our program."
South Carolina grabbed the first-round lead by shooting 14-under 274. Rounding out the field are Southern Cal and UCLA, both at 279, Florida at 282, Arkansas and Arizona State at 283, Oklahoma State at 286, Virginia at 287, Arizona and UCF at 288 and Duke at 293.
South Carolina's Katelyn Dambaugh is atop the individual leaderboard following an 8-under 64.
Play continues through Tuesday. The Bulldogs will be paired with South Carolina and Southern Cal on Monday, teeing off in waves from 8:50-9:30 am. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
