STANFORD, Calif. — The No. 4-ranked Georgia women's golf team posted a 9-over 293 in Friday's opening round of the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Condoleezza Rice. The Bulldogs are in sixth place in the 18-team field, eight strokes off the lead.

"We battled through some tough conditions that we haven't seen this year," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We've put ourselves in position to where if we have a good round tomorrow, we'll have a chance to bring home our third championship of the season come Sunday."

Georgia's counting scores on Friday were an even-par 71 from Mary Ellen Shuman, a 72 from Jillian Hollis and a pair of 75s from Rinko Mitsunaga and Bailey Tardy.

Individually, Shuman is tied for eighth, four shots behind Georgia Lacey of San Diego State on the individual leaderboard. In addition, Hollis is tied for 11th, Mitsunaga and Tardy are tied for 40th and Sammi Lee, who posted a 86, is 89th.

"I'm really proud of Mary Ellen and her round today, and Jillian battled through an illness to give us a very solid round" Brewer said. "Mary Ellen's round is exactly what this team needed. We're ranked in the top-5 in the country and have very big goals this season. We need this type of performance to reach those goals."

Shuman started well, with birdies on No. 12 and No. 13 to move to 2-under through just four holes. She bogeyed No. 17 and turned at 1-under. She remained their through the first eight holes on the front side before a bogey at No. 9 closed her day at even-par.

No. 17 Northwestern grabbed the team lead with a 1-over 285. The tightly-bunched field features No. 8 UCLA in second at 288, followed by No. 22 Arizona State at 291, No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 Souther Cal both at 292, the Bulldogs at 293, Cal at 294, No. 5 Florida at 197, Iowa State at 298 and Stanford's "B" team at 300.
