ATHENS, Ga. --- Despite solid outings from redshirt senior Jasmine Eatmon and sophomore Maddie Lobenstein, the Georgia volleyball team (5-23, 0-16) dropped a 3-0 match to Mississippi State (15-15, 4-12) on Sunday night.
Georgia fell by scores of 27-25, 25-17 and 25-19, as MSU was led by Alex Warren's 21 kills and four aces.
Lobenstein finished with nine kills while Eatmon closed out her career in the Ramsey Center with nine kills, three blocks and an ace on Senior Day.
"Jasmine is an incredible leader and an incredible person, so regardless of stats or results, we knew she was going to come out and give it everything she has because she does that every time," said head coach Lizzy Stemke. "It was really, really great to have today to honor her, to honor her family and to celebrate an incredible career."
Along with Eatmon, redshirt juniors Desiree McCray and Megan Spencer had three blocks each while Cassidy Anderson added 12 digs and a trio of service aces. Sophomore Kendall Kazor notched 15 assists and five digs while freshman Sarah Lagler-Clark dished out 13 assists and seven digs.
Georgia opened the match strong after a Bre Laney ace and back-to-back blocks put the Athens Bulldogs ahead 3-0. Georgia led most of the frame, including 15-12 at the media timeout, but MSU came back to tie at 20 before taking its first lead the next point. Georgia found itself with set point at 24-23 and 25-24, but MSU closed out the next three points for the 27-25 win. Georgia hit .324 in the frame led by Eatmon and Lobenstein's five kills.
MSU had its best offensive set of the night in the second frame, hitting .375 as a team, including Warren at .600 with seven kills en route to a 25-17 win. Georgia came back to lead 5-3 after an Eatmon kill, but a 5-0 run from the Maroon and White had MSU ahead 8-5 with momentum the rest of the set. Anderson had two of her three aces in the set, helping Georgia to get within five at 17-12, but wouldn't be enough.
Out of the break, Georgia couldn't find a rhythm, as multiple-point runs from MSU had them with the advantage the whole set and sealing the sweep at 25-19. MSU hit .361 despite Anderson tallying six of Georgia's 13 digs in the set.
"We're trying to find some consistency," Stemke said. "We talked a lot in the locker room about making sure that we're competing as the best team that we can be. We've got five days to give it everything we have and to come together as much as we can."
Georgia concludes the season next week with road trips to Kentucky and Tennessee. The Bulldogs face the Wildcats on Wednesday and the Volunteers on Friday.
