COLUMBIA, Mo. --- Hanging right there with one of the top teams in the league, the Georgia volleyball team (5-20, 0-13) dropped a close contest at Mizzou (22-4, 10-3) on Friday night, as the Tigers made comebacks in each frame to win the contest 3-0.
"Loved the way our team competed tonight," said head coach Lizzy Stemke. "We were swing-for-swing with Mizzou the entire match. We played fantastic defense and took some really big swings. We played Georgia volleyball. We fell short with some errors at inopportune times at the end of sets, but overall loved the way we competed tonight."
The Bulldogs fell by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-19, as Devan Porter, Megan Spencer and Desiree McCray had eight kills each. Defensively, McCray led the Bulldogs up front with five blocks while Elle McCord put up 11 digs. Kendall Kazor followed McCord with eight digs to go with 26 assists and a trio of blocks.
Carly Kan continues to be a force for Mizzou, leading the Tigers with 13 kills to go along with six digs, as the home team hit .311 for the match to take the sweep.
Georgia went up 7-4 in the first after a Maddie Lobenstein kill. The Bulldogs would continue to lead until Mizzou earned its first advantage at 18-15 after four-straight points. Hitting .242 for the set helped Georgia be within one at 22-21 and 23-22, but the Tigers went on to win 25-22.
A quick start jumped Georgia out to a 3-0 lead after McCray had one of her two solo blocks of the night. Back-to-back kills by Caroline Ostman and McCray had the Bulldogs with the edge at 11-8, but Mizzou worked its way back to tie it at 13. After that, five tied scores and two lead changes had it at 18 each after a block by McCray and Kazor, but miscues hurt Georgia late, allowing Mizzou to win 25-18.
Out of the break, Georgia capitalized on Mizzou's mistakes, as a 5-0 run capped by a McCord ace put the Bulldogs with the early advantage. Georgia then found itself down 13-11, but regained the lead at 14-13 after a Kazor kill. The teams traded points before being knotted at 17 each with a McCray kill, but Mizzou found momentum to go up 22-17 en route to the 25-19 win.
The Bulldogs return to action at Arkansas on Sunday, Nov. 15. The match against the Razorbacks will air on SEC Network+/WatchESPN with a 2:30 p.m. ET first serve.
