ATHENS, Ga. - Despite a career-high 21 kills on a .645 hitting percentage from senior middle hitter Valentina Gonzalez, the University of Georgia volleyball team dropped a Southeastern Conference match to Arkansas, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Ramsey Student Center.
After Georgia took the first set 25-18, Arkansas won three-straight sets by scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22 to come away with the win and improve to 10-13 overall and 4-8 in SEC action. Georgia drops to 11-12 overall and 3-9 in league play.
Gonzalez's 21 kills surpassed her previous career-high of 18 and tied Arkansas' Jasmine Norton for a match-best on Sunday. Gonzalez was supported in the middle hitter position by junior Ann Dylla's 13 kills on a career-best .667 clip as the Bulldogs offense was paced by junior setter Kathleen Gates' 46 assists.
UGA finished the match outhitting Arkansas .376 to .311. However, Arkansas found an edge in the service game and in blocks. The Razorbacks picked up nine aces with just eight service errors while the Bulldogs had five aces and 15 service errors, and at the net, Arkansas led the match with 10.0 blocks compared to Georgia's 7.0. Charmaine Whitmore led the Razorbacks with a match-best nine blocks. For Georgia, the defensive leader was junior libero Carla Tietz with a match-best 14 digs.
Norton's 21 kills for Arkansas came on a .444 clip and she was aided by Kendall Cleveland's 10 kills and Kelli Stipanovich's nine kills.
Up next, Georgia takes to the road with trips to Lexington, Ky., and Knoxville, Tenn., to face the Kentucky Wildcats and Tennessee Lady Volunteers, respectively, on Oct. 29 and Oct. 31.
