Hoffa Finishes Second At World Indoor Championships
March 10, 2008 | Track & Field
Hoffa, an Augusta, Ga., native who was also the defending champion at the World Indoor Championships after topping the field at the 2006 meet, had an effort of 69 feet, 6 3/4 inches on his second attempt to lock down second place. Fellow American Christian Cantwell won the meet after his fifth throw traveled 71-5.25.
"Becoming a silver medalist in this sort of meet is quite an outstanding accomplishment," said Georgia throws coach Don Babbitt. "He now has two gold medals and two silver medals at World Championship meets so he is building up a pile of them and I don't think he is done collecting them."
A five-time All-American and a Southeastern Conference champion while at Georgia from 1998-2001, Hoffa had a season-best mark of 70-6.25 for the longest throw during the qualifying round. During the finals, Hoffa had another throw that traveled 68-0.50, but recorded three fouls to end the competition.
Hoffa was ranked the world's No. 1 shot putter after the 2007 seasons and is a frontrunner in the event with the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, (Aug. 8-24) drawing near. Hoffa still lives and trains in Athens with Babbitt.
