Bulldogs Prepare For Match Play Championship
October 26, 2007 | Men's Golf
ATHENS, Ga. The fourth-ranked Georgia men’s golf team will wrap up the fall portion of its schedule next week at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship.
The Bulldogs, winners of two straight stroke-play events, will join an elite 16-team field at the Oconee Course at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro Sunday through Tuesday.
Georgia is the sixth seed for the tournament and the Bulldogs will face 11th-seeded Lamar in the first round. The winner and the loser of that match will take on the winner and the loser of the match between No. 3 seed Georgia Tech and No. 14 seed Texas.
The other first-round matchups pit No. 1 Charlotte against No. 16 Coastal Carolina, No. 2 Alabama against No. 15 Georgia State, No. 4 UCLA against No. 13 Minnesota, No. 5 Oklahoma State against No. 12 Tennessee, No. 7 Florida State against No. 10 South Carolina and No. 8 Duke against No. 9 Florida.
Georgia will bring a lineup of juniors Brian Harman and Adam Mitchell, sophomores Rob Bennett and Hudson Swafford, and freshmen Harris English and Russell Henley. The matches will be five against five, but coaches may make substitutions rather than keep the entire lineup throughout.
“Lamar may not be a team a lot of people know about, but they have some talented players and we know it will be a tough match,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “Our guys really enjoy the match play format, and we’ve got some guys who have had some success in match play. This is a fun event at a great venue, and we hope a lot of Georgia people will come out and root us on.”
