Minnesota: 2020: Indoor - Team captain…Declared All-American in the shot put after qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships and then having the meet cancelled days before it began because of the COVID-19 pandemic…Finished fifth or better in all seven shot competitions, including three wins at the McCravy Memorial, the Minnesota Invite and the SDSU Holiday Open…His win at the McCravy meet included an attempt of 20.50 meters (67 feet, 3 ¼ inches) – a mark that ranks second all-time at Minnesota, ranked fourth among all NCAA competitors in 2020 and was a personal best…Scored at the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships with a fifth-place finish in the shot…Academic All-Big Ten…Earned CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team honors along with his second career CoSIDA Academic All-District accolade…
2019: Indoor - Team captain…Had two wins and six top-10 finishes in the shot…Won the shot at the Jack Johnson Classic with a personal record of 19.50 meters (63-11.75) -- Minnesota's top throw of the season and a mark that ranked third in school history…Finished 14th in the shot at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships to earn a Second Team All-America accolade…Scored for Minnesota with a third-place finish at the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships…Also won the shot put at the Wieczorek Invitational.
Outdoor - Team captain while competing in the shot and discus…Finished second in the shot at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships to earn Second Team All-Big Ten honors behind a personal record of 19.93 meters (65-4.75) -- Minnesota's best throw of the year and a mark that tied for second in school history…Also scored for the Gophers with a sixth-place finish in the discus at the Big Ten meet…Recorded a personal record in the discus at Drake Relays with a personal-best attempt of 55.08 meters (180-6)…Represented Minnesota in the shot and discus at the NCAA West Preliminary….Won the shot at the Duke Invitational at 18.82 meters (61-9.00) and recorded 11 top-10 finishes….CoSIDA Academic All-District, USTFCCCA All-Academic, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten.
2018: Indoor - Record six top-10 finishes in six competitions on the year including two wins in the shot…Notched Minnesota's top mark of the season at the 2018 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships at 18.14 meters (59-6.25)….Won the shot put at the Snowshoe Open and the Minnesota Open.
Outdoor - Recorded the ninth-best performance in school history and Minnesota's top shot put attempt of the year at National Relays with his mark of 18.54 meters (60-10.00)…Won the shot at UCLA (18.16 meters/59-7.00) and recorded nine top-10 finishes…Scored for Minnesota with a seventh-place finish in the shot at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships….Academic All-Big Ten….Earned second letter in track & field.
2017: Indoor - Competed in the shot put and the weight throw with five top-10 finishes….Won the shot at the Minnesota Open with a mark of 17.12 meters (56-2.00) -- Minnesota's top throw of the season….Recorded a personal record of 14.62 meters (47-11.75) in his only weight throw attempt of the year at The Dual.
Outdoor - Won two event titles and recorded eight top-10 finishes in the shot put…Recorded his best attempt of the year at the Tomcat Twilight at 16.01 meters (52-6.50), finishing third…Won shot at the Bear Cat Twilight and the Meet of the UnSaintly….Academic All-Big Ten…Earned first letter in track & field.

High School: 2014-15 Gatorade North Dakota Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year…2015 North Dakota High School Activities Association Senior Athlete of the Year…Four-time North Dakota Class A state champion winning three straight titles in the shot put (2013-15) and adding a championship in the discus in 2015…Member of the National Honor Society.
Personal: Born Feb. 18, 1997…Son of Jon Tharaldsen and Gina Madson…Father played football at University of Mary (Bismarck, N.D.)…Has four younger siblings…Also played football and basketball at Bismarck…Graduated with an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from Minnesota and is enrolled in the Sport Management Master’s program at UGA.
