September 20, 2025 | Track & Field

TOYKO, Japan --- Former Bulldog collegiate record holder Kyle Garland (USA) holds more than a 150-point lead halfway through the decathlon as the nine-day World Athletics Championships continued in Tokyo, Japan.

Garland, a native of Philadelphia, Pa., has scored 4,707 points following the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m to stand 164 points ahead of Sander Skotheim (Norway), who has 4,543 points.  Garland is just off his day one personal best that eventually allowed him to claim the title at the USATF Championships.  Skotheim is 68 points off of the pace from his world-leading score earlier this year.

Current Georgia sprinter Dejanea Oakley (Jamaica) ran the opening leg on the 4x400-meter relay that finished second in the qualifying round with a 3:22.77.  The final in the event will arrive on the meet's final day.

In other action, Kelsie Murrell-Ross (Grenada) launched a top effort of 16.19m (53-1.50) to compete the competition in 35th.

Also of note, Georgia great Elena Kulichenko soared over the high jump bar to be one of 16 qualifiers earlier in the meet and will be competing on the coming final day of competition along with the decathletes.

Former Bulldog national champion Lynna Irby-Jackson was already part of Team USA's gold medal winning mixed 4x400m relay to jumpstart the World Championships on the first day of action.
