HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Freshman Natachanok "Drive" Tunwannarux fired a 5-under 66 to lead the Georgia women's golf team to an even-par 284 team tally in Tuesday's second round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club. In the process, the No. 28-ranked Bulldogs ascended five spots on the team leaderboard to seventh.
Georgia is at 6-over 574 through two of the tournament's three rounds, an event which features six top-10 and 11 top-25 teams.
"It was a really good round of golf," head coach Josh Brewer said. "This is an elite field like we'll see at the national championships, and we put up a good score on a hard day."
The Bulldogs were one of only three teams to shoot par-or-better on Tuesday.
Tunwanna blistered the front side of the Long Cove Club layout, turning at 6-under. She birdied No. 3, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 8 before an eagle-2 at No. 9. She cooled off on the back side, posting eight pars with her lone bogey of the day at No. 17.
"It was a pretty special day of golf for her," Brewer said. "It shows how talented she is and what she's capable of. Hopefully, today will give her the confidence that she can always go low. It's great for her teammates to see that in her too. Maybe someone else can step up when they get to 3- of 4-under and go really low like Drive did today."
In addition to Tunwannarux's 66, the Bulldogs also counted a pair of 72s from Savannah De Bock and Caterina Don and a 74 by LoraLie Cowart.
Overall, Don is tied for 11th at 1-under 141, De Bock is tied for 24th at 144, Tunwannarux is tied for 44th at 146, Cowart is tied for 63rd at 149 and Holpfer is tied for 72nd at 151.
No. 11 Auburn, No. 12 Northwestern and No. 20 Arizona State have separated from the field. The Wildcats are at 563, a shot better than the Sun Devils and three ahead of the Tiger. There is a five-shot gap behind that trio followed by No. 18 Duke at 571, No. 4 LSU and No. 5 South Carolina at 572, the Bulldogs at 574, No. 2 Wake Forest and No. 7 Texas at 575 and Kentucky at 578.
Tunwannarux's effort was the best of her collegiate career, topping a 3-under 68 in the opening round of the Cougar Classic last fall. The team tally represented Georgia's first par-or-better loop of the spring season and eighth of the 2023-24 campaign.
Georgia will play with Texas and Wake Forest during Wednesday's final round and tee off from No. 1 between 9:30-10:10 a.m. ET. The Golf Channel will air live coverage from 2:30-5:30, and live scoring will be available via golfstat.com.
"We believe we should be in an even better position than we're in, but we'll go out tomorrow and look at this as if we're fighting for a spot in match play at the national championships," Brewer said. "That's really what the field here is like. We want to make sure there is a green arrow by our name tomorrow because if there is, that means we had another good round of golf competing against an extremely elite field."
