Track & Field Set To Compete At Hurricane Collegiate Invitational

March 22, 2024 | Track & Field

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Bulldog track and field teams will compete in their second outdoor meet of the season when they head to Coral Gables, Fla., for the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.

The Miami-hosted meet marks the season opener outdoors for most of Georgia's competitors, including the jumpers, throwers, and sprinters. The Bulldogs' distance runners opened their season last week at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.

Who's The Competition?: The Bulldogs are expected to be one of 11 squads competing at the University of Miami. Georgia will be joined in Coral Gables by Bucknell, Buffalo State, Colorado School of Mines, Duke, Florida Atlantic, Florida Memorial, Harvard, Notre Dame, Nova Southeastern, and the hosts.

When Do The Bulldogs Start?: Freshman long jumpers Micah Larry and Zavien Wolfe will open the Bulldogs' day in the field events at 9:30 a.m. The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Aaliyah Butler, Kaila Jackson, Autumn Wilson, and Karsen Phillips will take the track at 1:05 p.m. to kick off the running events for Georgia.

Where To Catch The Action: There will be ESPN streaming coverage from Miami starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Coach Caryl's Comments: "Our distance runners got back to work last weekend and now we are excited for our sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers to get their outdoor season rolling," said Georgia Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert. "While some of our team traveling is hoping to build on the momentum from the indoor season, others will be competing for the first time in more than eight months. The goal this weekend is to set a strong foundation with times and marks that we can continue to build on during the regular season. We are expecting to have warmer temperatures in Miami than we have had but with that comes a better chance for rain, so we are hoping it holds off enough for us to get our events in. GO DAWGS!"

What Bulldogs Are Competing?: For the women, Leah Anderson, Charlotte Augenstein, Butler, Daszay Freeman, Kieley Gayle, Kimberly Harris, Sydney Harris, Jackson, Elena Kulichenko, Erin McMeniman, Kelsie Murrell-Ross, Dominique Mustin, Phillips, Zoe Pollock, Ella Rush, Haley Tate, Wilson, and Bella Witt are set to make the trip to Coral Gables.

The men's squad is set to feature Gavin Beverage, Jan Duhovnik, Ali Elashmawi, Mekhi Gammons, Jehlani Gordon, Hossam Hatib, Larry, Jordan McKenzie, Marc Minichello, Christopher Morales Williams, Alon Rogow, Nikolai van Huyssteen, and Wolfe.

LAST WEEK'S FLASHBACK – Yellow Jacket Invitational (March 16): Georgia's distance runners opened the outdoor season at the Georgia Tech-hosted Yellow Jacket Invitational last Saturday. Augenstein led the way with a victory in the 800-meter run, moving into No. 5 in Georgia history in the event, while Gracie O'Neal collected a win in her first 5,000m race. Augenstein currently holds the nation's No. 6 time in the 800m.

Glimpse At Where This Season Will Take The Dogs: The Bulldogs will split the squad for the first time this outdoor season next weekend. The distance runners will compete in the Raleigh Relays from March 28-30 while the rest of the team travels to LSU to compete in the Battle on the Bayou on March 29-30. There will be a total of nine scheduled regular season outdoor meets over seven weekends.

The SEC Championships will arrive on May 9-11 in Gainesville, Fla., with the NCAA East Prelims scheduled for May 22-25 in Lexington, Ky. The 2024 NCAA Championships return to the site of this year's U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., on June 5-8. The Trials will run June 21-30 at the Hayward Field facility.
