Georgia takes day away from basketball to visit Florence

FLORENCE, Italy — The Georgia Bulldogs ventured away from Rome on Tuesday for the first time since arriving in Italy last Friday. The team enjoyed a day trip to Florence.

The Bulldogs made the roughly 90-minute trek via train north into Tuscany, a journey which included views of the hill town of Cortona, home of the popular University of Georgia study abroad campus.

First up upon arrival in Florence was lunch. Guides led the team to a two-story market that resembled what would be considered to be a food court in the States. The facility offered numerous options of a variety of cuisines for the players to choose from.

After lunch, the team gathered behind the Piazza San Marco to begin a walking tour. Guides led groups through crowded streets filled with tourists consistently mentioning the name of one family – the Medicis. The family led Florence for the large part of three centuries and had various residences throughout the city and played a major influence on some of Florence's most famous attractions.

The dynasty began with the founding of the Medici Bank in the late 1300s. During the 15th century, the bank grew to be the largest in Europe and became the official bank of the pope. In fact, four members of the Medici family went on to become pope.

The Medicis invested much into the arts and sciences. As our guide Valentina told us, "the Medicis were the first patrons of the arts following the Middle Ages."

The Medicis chose Brunelleschi to build the famous dome which towers over Florence's Duomo. He was the first of what became an almost unfathomable list of the artists the Medicis supported during the Renaissance, including Michelangelo, Leonardo de Vinci, Botticelli, Raphael, Machiavelli and Galileo.

After a brief break for gelato, the tour brought the team to the Ponte Vecchio, the famous bridge over the Arno River. Once a hub for butchers, tanners and farmers, the bridges' shops today are almost exclusively occupied by jewelers selling gold.

After crossing the bridge, the group trekked up to Piazzale Michelangelo, a park overlooking the city which provides spectacular views of Florence.

Following some free time, the team boarded its train and returned to Rome in time for a last evening in the Eternal City.
