Bulldogs Set To Host NCAA Regional At UGA Course
The Georgia women's golf team will open NCAA postseason competition at 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning in a familiar locale – the University of Georgia Golf Course.

The Bulldogs will be among 12 teams and six individuals competing in the NCAA's Athens Regional attempting to advance to the NCAA Championships. The 54-hole tournament will be contested from Monday-Wednesday at the UGA course. The top-5 teams and the low individual is not a member of those teams will earn bids to the national championships, which will be held May 19-24 at Grayhawk Golf Course in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Georgia, which is ranked No. 30 by both Golfweek and Golfstat, is the No. 5 seed in the tournament. Head coach Josh Brewer sees pluses and minuses to being at home.

"There's a lot of build up and anxiety at the same time because you have the pressure of getting out if you're hosting and one of the better schools," Brewer said. "You want there to be an advantage, but you also want to limit distractions. You learn from what you did at the Liz Murphey. You take the good and fix the things you can correct."

Georgia finished sixth at the 51st annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens in March. The tournament's final round was canceled due to inclement weather conditions.

The Bulldogs' Regional lineup will feature Jo Hua Hung, Jenny Bae, Candice Mahé, LoraLie Cowart and Isabella Holpfer, with Caterina Don serving as a potential substitute.

Georgia is looking to advance from Regionals for the third straight season.

In 2021, the Bulldogs and Bae swept the individual and team titles at the Columbus Regional before finishing 18th at the NCAA Championships.

Last spring, Georgia placed third at the Albuquerque Regional before a strong showing in Scottsdale. The Bulldogs tied for eighth in stroke play qualifying to advance to match play at the national championships for the first time since the format was introduced in 2015. Georgia dropped a 3-2 decision to Stanford, the eventual NCAA champs, in the quarterfinals to secure a fifth-place national finish. That represented the Bulldogs' best effort at the national championships since 2002.

The last time Georgia reached the national championships site three consecutive years was from 2007-09.

"We think we've figured out a formal," Brewer said. "Even though we're at home, we're keeping the same things we've done the past two years as far as three days before, two days before and one day before. Also, I think that this team has a knack. They're such great golfers, and they've displayed the ability to step up when the stakes are highest."

Brewer's goal for the Regional is for the Bulldogs to secure their first team victory of the season. Georgia finished as runner-up at the San Diego State Classic and has a pair of third-place showings. However, finishing fifth or better to advance to Scottsdale is the ultimate goal.

"You hope you don't worry about the second piece because you are trying to win a Regional, which is a big honor," Brewer said. "Also, you have to battle all the way through because at the end of the day, fifth is the same as first when you tee it up at the national championships."

Georgia will be paired with fourth-seeded Ohio State and sixth-seeded Maryland on Monday, teeing off from hole No. 10 in 11-minute intervals from 8:00-8:55 a.m. The Regional's top-3 seeds – South Carolina, San Jose State and Ole Miss – will tee off at the same time as Bulldogs, Buckeyes and Terrapins from hole No. 1.

The other six schools in the field, in seeded order, are Kent State, Charleston, Kansas, Furman, Augusta and Sacred Heart. The individuals competitors are led by Tulane's Carla Bernat, who is ranked No. 15 nationally by Golfstat.

Bulldogs Own Strong History In National Championship Play
Georgia has long been one of the college golf's premier women's programs, headlined by four total national titles – one team and three individual.

The Bulldogs won the 2001 NCAA title at Mission In Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Individually, Terri Moody earned medalist honors at the 1981 AIAW Championships at the UGA Golf Course, while Cindy Schreyer and Vicki Goetze captured titles at the 1984 and 1992 NCAA Championships, respectively.

Those performances are the peak of Georgia's history.

As a team, the Bulldogs now sport 21 top-10 and 28 top-20 team finishes at 44 AIAW and NCAA Championships since 1979. Georgia golfers have produced 38 top-20 efforts at the national championships, including both Jenny Bae and Candice Mahé tying for sixth last season.

Since the NCAA went to a Regional format in 1993, Georgia also has claimed five team and three individual titles. The Bulldogs won East Regional crowns in 1993, 1998 and 1999, the Bryan Regional in 2016 and the 2021 Columbus Regional. The trio of Georgia golfers who have captured medalist honors are Reilley Rankin in 1998, Bailey Tardy in 2016 and Jenny Bae in 2021.

Bae Enjoying One OF Best Seasons Ever By A Bulldog
Fifth-year super senior Jenny Bae has put together one of the strongest seasons ever by a Georgia Bulldog.

Bae enters the Athens Regional ranked as the nation's No. 5 golfer by both Golfweek and Golfstat.

Over 10 tournaments, Bae is a combined 24-under over 29 rounds. She has 20 par-or-better rounds, a stroke average of 70.86. Bae could conceivably break both of Georgia's single-season records for the aforementioned categories, as outlined below.

"It's definitely special," Josh Brewer said. "I don't even know if she really realizes how great a year it has been because she's just playing golf. Strangely, she's probably a little disappointed she hasn't won more, even though the record books will say that it's one of the great seasons in Georgia's history."

UGA Golf Course Also Sports Strong National Resume
The University of Georgia Golf Course is hosting a part of the national championships for the eighth time this spring.

The UGA layout has hosted the national championship finals on five occasions – the 1971 Division of Girls' and Women's Sports (DGWS) Intercollegiate Championships, the 1981 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Championships and the 1983, 1993 and 2013 NCAA Championships.

The 2023 NCAA Regional will be the third contested on the UGA layout in the last 16 seasons, following those in 2008 and 2017.

The 2023 Athens Regional actually has been six years in the making.

In April of 2017, Georgia was announced as a 2020 Regional site. The event was canceled with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In October of 2020, the NCAA announced Athens would be a 2023 Regional site to replace the 2020 tournament that was not held.

Bae Shines At Augusta
Jenny Bae's valiant comeback effort came up just short at the 2023 Augusta National Women's Amateur. Bae rallied from a six-shot deficit entering the final round to force a sudden-death playoff before Rose Zhang, the world's No. 1 ranked amateur, secured victory on the second extra hole.

Bae and Zhang finished 54 holes tied at 9-under 207. Bae closed with a 2-under 70, equaling the low loop of the day and one of only three par-or-better efforts in the final round at Augusta National.

Bae quickly cut the deficit in half before a weather day. When play resumed, Bae birdied No. 9, No. 13 and No. 17 to tie Zhang.

"To be honest I tried to avoid looking at the leaderboard for a little over the first nine holes," Bae said. "Then, I glanced back and saw that I was about a shot behind, and I was like 'I can do this. Let's get it.' I think the last three or four holes when the roaring was so big, I realized I had a good chance."

Both golfers parred No. 18, setting up ANWA's first-ever playoff. They returned to No. 18 and again made par before moving onto No. 10, where Bae's approach went left of the green into pine straw. Zhang eventually converted a tap-in par to secure the win.

Bae's effort was a record-setting performance. She tied the ANWA record with seven first-round birdies and eventually broke the ANWA record with 16 birdies over 54 holes, topping the tally of 15 by Maria Fassi in 2019.

Plenty Of ANWA Experience
All told, five current and future Bulldogs have now competed in the Augusta National Women's Amateur seven times.

In addition to Bae in 2022 and 2023, signee Savannah de Bock, the 2022 European Ladies Amateur champion from Belgium, qualified this year; Don did so in 2019 and 2021; and Isabella Holpfer and Candice Mahé played in 2021.

Trio Of Bulldogs Earn Wins
Jenny Bae, Caterina Don and Jo Hua Hung all have captured individual victories during the 2022-23 season.

Bae won the Illini Invitational last October in record-setting fashion, posting a 16-under tally to shatter Bailey Tardy's previous Georgia record – 12-under at the 2015 Windy City Collegiate – by four shots.

Bae started the final round in second at historic Medinah Country Club but quickly moved to the top of the leaderboard with birdies on two of her first three holes. She eventually shot 6-under 66 including birdies on her final two holes to clinch her second collegiate individual title.

Hung began the 2023 portion of Georgia's schedule by winning the Lady Bulldog Individual Championship, a one-day, 36-hole event at the UGA Golf Course.

Hung recorded consecutive 71s to finish at 2-under 142. Hung and teammates Céleste Dao and Isabella Holpfer traded the lead throughout the day.

Don notched her second win as a Bulldog with an even-par effort at the San Diego State Classic at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.

Don surged past Hung en route to victory. She was two shots back of her teammate at the turn of the final round but moved into a tie with a quartet of birdies at No. 11, No. 13, No. 14 and No. 15. Don went up a stroke when Hung bogeyed No. 17 before both golfers parred No. 18.

SEC Leads NCAA Teams
A nation-leading and record-setting 13 Southeastern Conference teams earned bids to the 2023 NCAA Women's Golf Championships field.

SEC teams earned No. 1 seeds at four of six Regional sites.

The Bulldogs, Gamecocks and Rebels will be in Athens. Texas A&M will be the top seed in San Antonio along with Auburn as the No. 2 seed. Mississippi State will be the No. 1 seed in Westfield, Ind., and will compete along with No. 3 seed Vanderbilt and No. 7 seed Tennessee. In Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., LSU will be the No. 1 seed, followed by Arkansas as the No. 8 seed and Alabama as the No. 9 seed. Rounding out the league teams are Florida as the No. 4 seed in Raleigh, N.C., and Kentucky as the No. 5 seed in Pullman, Wash.

The league also had 13 teams qualify for the 2013 NCAA field.

Trailing the SEC in 2023 are the Big Ten and Pac 12 with eight teams each and the ACC and Big 12 with seven teams each.

Bae, Don Earn SEC Honors
Jenny Bae and Caterina Don earned SEC Golfer of the Week accolades during the 2022-23 season.

Bae was tabbed three times. During the fall, she was recognized on both Oct. 13 – after she won the Illini Invitational – and Oct. 27 – following a fourth-place effort at the Stanford Intercollegiate. Bae was again honored on April 3 after finishing as runner-up at the Augusta National Women's Am.

Don's accolade came on Feb. 15 after she claimed medalist honors and led Georgia to a runner-up team finish in the San Diego State Classic.
