BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Georgia fired a 6-over 294 in Wednesday's opening round of the SEC Women's Golf Championships at Greystone Golf and Country Club. The Bulldogs are tied with Auburn and Kentucky in seventh place on a tightly packed team leaderboard with only six shots separating second and 13th.
"I'm pleased and also a little disappointed," head coach Josh Brewer said. "Can I use both words to describe our round? It's a solid start. The leaderboard is going to be bunched and every shot is going to matter."
Senior Candice Mahé paced Georgia with a 1-under 71 on Wednesday. The Bulldogs also counted a 73 from Jo Hua Hung, a 74 from Jenny Bae and a 76 from Caroline Craig.
"It was a great round by Candice, but I feel like the good thing is we probably survived a few people struggling just a little bit," Brewer said. "That's why it's a team. Our highest score is 77 so it tells you about our depth. We're in a good position with two days left in stroke play."
Mahé's loop was an eventful one featuring seven pars, six birdies and five bogeys. Georgia teed off from No. 10 and Mahé immediately started with pair of birdies. She turned at 1-under after additional birdies at No. 14 and No. 18 to go along with bogeys at No. 12, No. 15 and No. 17.
Mahé's back-and-forth play continued on the front side. She went birdie-bogey-birdie at Nos. 1-3 before, leaving her a 2-under through 12 holes but with only two pars on the day. Mahé settled in after that and parred five of her last six holes.
"Honestly, I'm very happy," Mahé said. "I had six birdies today, which is a lot on this golf course. It also showed how hard this course is and that you have to stay patient because unfortunately I also had five bogeys. It wasn't that bad, just a couple of bad reads and 3-putts can come really quick."
Overall, Mahe is among a quartet of golfers tied for ninth, three shots off the pace of Vanderbilt's Celina Sattelkau. Also for Georgia, Hung is tied for 18th, Bae is tied for 27th, Craig is tied for 47th and Caterina Don, who shot 77, is tied for 56th.
No. 19 Vanderbilt grabbed the team lead by shooting even-par 288. The Commodores are two strokes ahead of No. 20 Florida, followed by No. 3 LSU and No. 5 Mississippi State at 292; No. 4 South Carolina and Alabama at 293; the Bulldogs, No. 10 Tigers and Wildcats all at 294; No. 13 Texas A&M, No. 14 Ole Miss and Tennessee at 295; Missouri at 296; and Arkansas at 306.
"We joke as coaches at our annual meeting that it might be harder to win the SECs than a national title," Brewer said. "I know other schools don't want to hear that, but it's the truth. We have the best teams in the country, and we know we have to play better the next two days to get into match play."
The SECs will continue with additional rounds of stroke play qualifying on Thursday and Friday. The field will then be trimmed to eight teams for a bracketed, match-play competition on Saturday and Sunday to determine the league champion.
"We have to finish strong the next two days because everybody is super close in terms of scores," Mahé said. "It's just small details that are going to make the difference because everybody here wants to win. We just want to find our way out and make it to match play and then take it day by day."
Georgia, Auburn and Kentucky will be paired together for Thursday's second round, teeing off in 10-minute intervals from No. 1 between 10:40-11:20 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
